Documenting animals in their natural habitat can be a difficult task. Photographers use various means to remain undetected such as camouflaging themselves or staying a distance away. Sometimes despite the effort, the subject of the shot catches onto the photographer. Here’s a selection of Swild’s best caught on camera moments!
Macaca munzala
(South Tibetan Macaques)
This male macaque looks shocked that someone wants to take his picture! The Macaca munzala is a new species that was published in 2005, and can be identified by it’s dark browncoat and distinctively short tail length when compared with other species of macaque. Adult male South Tibetan macaques, such as the also feature a line of black fur that from the corners of the mouth to ears, and this is another identifying feature ofthe species. The South Tibetan macaque population is sparsely populated and assuch is listed as an endangered species by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).
Lynx lynx
(Lynx)
This Lynx seems to haves potted our photographer despite the dense foliage. Lynx are top predators andhave a keen sense of hearing and smell that allow the lynx to detect others intheir environment. Lynx are recognisable by their fur and distinctive ears. Their fur is the softest of all cats (9,000 hairs per cm²) and varies in colour fromgrey to taupe. Alongside the colour, the spots on the lynx can vary from paleand clear as seen with the Himalayan lynx to more obvious spots seen on the European lynx. The ears usually have long tufts of fur with the inside covered in a white fur and the middle of the back revealing grey spots.
3.小麂
Muntiacus reevesi
(Chinese Muntjac)
This indignant look directed at the camera by the Chinese muntjac. They are also known as Reeves's muntjac in reference to John Reeves, a British East India Company employee dating back to the 19th century. His purposeful stare at the camera could be explained by the timid nature of this mammal. However, the Chinese muntjac canstand its own. It has been referred to as the‘barking deer’ due to the barking sound they produce during mating or when provoked. The males also have shortantlers and long tusks to use when fighting over territory or mates.
Ochotona erythrotis
(Chinese Red Pika)
Pika typically haveshort limbs, a small tail and round ears. The Chinese red pika stands out due to its reddish colouring and being the largest of the species. In winter, thepika’s fur becomes a grey colour and then returns to its yellow and red tonesin the summer. A burrowing species, the pika is rock dwelling and can be foundon cliff and rock terrain or in scrubland or meadows with nearby rock formations.
Budorcas taxicolor
(Takin)
This old male Takin has lost one horn as it was broken off during a fight. This means he cannot compete and keep up with his tribe, and is destined to live at low altitudes until he dies. Originally, it was assumed that takin were genetically similar to the muskox. However, recent mitochondrial research suggests they are more closely related to sheep. Yet their stocky body and deep chest suggests a physical similarity to the muskox, providing an example of convergent evolution.
Mustela eversmanii
(Steppe Polecat)
These steppe polecat shave caught the camera twice-over here! The steppe polecat can be recognised through its white-ish yellow fur with guard hairs with black tips. The polecattends to settle in one area, populated by prey (usually ground squirrels) and will remain there until the prey are extirpated. Luckily the ability of the steppepolecat to tolerate habitat changes and their position in many protected areas allows the steppe polecat to be ranked as‘Least Concern’by the IUCN.
Capricornis milneedwardsii
(Chinese Gazelle)
This Chinese gazelle was spotted by Zou Tao Photography in June during the early summer breeding season up Gongga Mountain in Sichuan. The male hid in thebush on the hillside to watch the photographers with curiosity. Chinese gazelles typically act fearful towards humans. Five minutes later it chased another male gazelle, paying no attention to the presence or proximity of the photographers. They can traverse such rocky terrain with ease and prefer to inhabit this landscape, but they have also been observed in forests as well as small offshore islands which they can swim to.
Mustela altaica
(Mountain Weasel)
A threatening glarewould be expected as a default from a predator, yet this mountain weasel has adelicate face and disgruntled stare. It hunts small animals such as pikas and chinchillas in the forest but has also been known to visit the river in order to catch fish. Mountain weasels will reside in rock crevices, tree trunks, and the abandoned burrows of prey it has killed. However unfortunately the lifestyle of the mountain weasel has been threatened by habitat and resource loss. It is forthis reason that the IUCN has classified mountain weasels as near threatened.
Ochotona thibetana
(Moupin Pika)
Spotted by another Pika! This moupin pika is of a smaller variety and in summer has russet-brown colouring which becomes a duller brown in the winter months. This pika is typically active during the day but can also be active at night. Found in rocky regions and bamboo forests, this pika is also known to burrow. Whilst currentlyrated as‘Least Concern’ by the IUCN, the habit of this pika is under risk due to deforestation and livestock grazing.
Ailuropoda melanoleuca
(Giant Panda)
This giant panda needs no introduction to anyone familiar with the wildlife of China. This picture is taken by the 4K-level triggering equipment independently developed by Swild based on years of field experience. This one particular panda on captured by trigger camera wears the gormless gaze characteristic of the black and white bear. The giant panda is endemic to China, and as such is protected at the first class national level. Due to this protection and through the breeding efforts pursued by China, in 2016 the reclassified the conservation status ofthe panda from endangered to vulnerable. This is good news for both pandas and China alike, as the animal has taken on an international role representing thecountry as a de factonational symbol.
