Error Prevention in Psychological Research

Everyone makes mistakes. In science, mistakes can occur in many ways: Researchers may transcribe things incorrectly, make typos when writing code to analyze data, forget to do something they intended to, and so forth. These mistakes may simply waste time or require redoing work, but in more serious cases, they can ruin an experiment or lead to false conclusions. In other industries like aviation, medicine, and construction, however, mistakes can be costly or even fatal. What can research scientists learn from these disciplines about how we might prevent and detect errors in our own research? In this talk, Strand will draw on lessons from human factors research in other disciplines and present recommendations for how scientists can apply those practices to our labs. This includes developing a lab culture around error prevention and implementing standardized protocols with the goal of safeguarding our work from future errors.

Julia Strand is an Associate Professor of Psychology at Carleton College.  She holds a B.A. in Psychology & English from Tufts University, an M.A. and PhD. from Washington University in St. Louis, program Brain, Behavior, & Cognition, and completed a postdoctoral fellowship in the Laboratory of Sensory Neuroscience and Neuroengineering, Department of Biomedical Engineering at Washington University in St. Louis. Her research is on how people perceive spoken language.

In addition to her empirical work, Julia also writes about open science, meta-science, R, methodology, measurement, and transparency in research. She has served as an Associate Editor at Advances in Methods and Practices in Psychological Science and on the programming committee for the Society for the Improvement of Psychological Science. Datasets, stimulus materials, code, and teaching materials are available on her Open Science Framework Page. Her open science course, Psychology’s Credibility Revolution, was showcased by the Framework for Reproducible Research Training’s Pedagogies Initiative.
