The UCLA Center for Language, Interaction, and Culture (CLIC) is happy to announce its first summer school to be held from August the 4th through the 24th, 2024 on the UCLA campus in the city of Los Angeles. The workshop will explore ways to analyze language use in social interaction and learn how social interactional and usage-based approaches to language can be applied to language teaching and learning.The 2024 CLIC summer workshop is aimed at graduate students and faculty who would like to learn more about conversation analysis, interactional linguistics or a general approach to the study of talk in interaction and who would benefit from improving their academic English (e.g., improving English presentation, writing, or reading skills). This workshop is not intended for US-based students or faculty nor those with strong English proficiency or advanced CA training. 01coursesThe 2024 CLIC Summer Workshop will take place August 4-24, 2024. The program includes four courses:Course 1: Academic EnglishThis three-week course is designed to improve academic English reading, writing, speaking, and listening abilities; it also offers an in-depth understanding of the system of higher education in the United States. Course 1 will take place Monday-Thursday 9am – 12m for three weeks.Instructors: Stephanie Kim & Nathan Nguyen, Linguistics/TESL, California State University – NorthridgeCourse 2: Conversational Organization: The Structure and Practice of Everyday InteractionIn this course, we will explore some of the fundamental principles that organize talk and social conduct in informal interactions among friends, family members, and colleagues. Course 2 will take place Monday-Thursday 1:30pm – 5pm, Week 1.Instructor: Steven Clayman, Sociology, UCLACourse 3: Social interaction and language teaching and learningIn this course, we will focus on theoretical foundations and practices in interactional approaches to second language teaching and learning. Course 3 will take place Monday-Thursday 1:30pm – 5pm, Week 2.Instructor: Hongyin Tao, Asian Languages and Cultures, UCLACourse 4: Social interaction in institutional settingsIn this course, we will discuss how talk and multi-modal behavior is particular to a series of institutional settings including medical, legal, and emergency call settings. Course 4 will take place Monday-Thursday 1:30pm – 5pm, Week 3.Instructor: Tanya Stivers, Sociology, UCLAParticipants must attend all four courses. There will also be an Opening reception on Sunday, August the 4th, and a Farewell lunch on Friday, August the 23rd.
02Program fees2024 Summer workshop fees vary according to accommodation type. Participants can choose between single and double on campus accommodation. During online registration, applicants will be prompted to choose an accommodation type. Room and rates availability are on a first-come first-served basis. Once an accommodation option is fully booked, applicants will be prompted to choose the remaining option or will have to withdraw.Participation Fees:$ 5,800 per person (single room)$ 4,900 per person (double room)Fees include on-campus housing (private or shared), two meals per day on site, and tuition and materials for all courses. Airfare, visas, and extracurricular activities are not included.
