The word "day" has two meanings. When we talk about the number of days in a year, we are using "day" to mean 24 hours. But when we talk about day and night, we are using "day" to mean the time between sunrise and sunset. Since the earth looks like a ball, the sun can shine on only half of it at a time. Always one half of the earth is having day and the other half night. A place is moved from day into night and from night into day over and over by the spinning(旋转)of the earth. At the equator(赤道)day and night are sometimes the same length(长度). They are each twelve hours long. The sun rises at 6 o'clock in the morning and sets at 6 o'clock in the evening. For six months the North Pole is tilted(倾料)toward the sun. In those months the Northern Hemisphere(半球)gets more hours of sunlight than the Southern Hemisphere. Days are longer than nights. South of the equator nights are longer than days. For the other six months the North Pole is tilted away from the sun. Then the Southern Hemisphere gets more sunlight. Days are longer than nights. North of the equator nights are longer than days. Winter is the season of long nights. Summer is the season of long days.

Alice spends her summer vacations walking back into history. Alice is 15 and she is a guide who shows visitors around the Fort(城堡)Delaware Museum in New York. "This year, I spun wool(纺毛线)on a spinning wheel. Last year, I was a candle maker. My first year, I cared for the garden and looked after the animals. All the jobs I've had at the fort have been really fun." Fort Delaware is a living-history museum that shows how life was in frontier(边远地区)America in the mid-1700s. "Reading about history can't compare to experiencing it for yourself ,"says Alice.

The experience begins as soon as visitors enter the fort. The smell of wood smoke fills the air. Women in petticoats(long skirts) and men in knee breeches(knee-length shorts)are busy with their chores. The guides show visitors how the settlers(移民)would have carried out everyday work. "Kids are surprised when I tell them that one of their jobs would have been to make candles," says another guide, 16-year-old Jane. "They don't realize that kids back then had to work hard." She also shows visitors how to play with toys and games.

They are playing historical parts, so the guides can't wear shorts or T-shirts when the weather is hot. But the clothes of the past can easily change modern kids into people in 18th century. "The clothing felt strange at first, but it does make it easier to get into characters," says Jane.

Working at the fort has helped Jane to appreciate her life even more. Alice agrees. "The fort has taught me how hard life was and how much work there was every day. We are so lucky with everything we have now. Life wasn't always this easy," she says.

       C. People could use a spinning wheel.

       D. Kids didn't feed the animals.

(    )8.Why do modern kids have to wear the strange clothing while playing historical parts?

       A. Because wearing the strange clothing makes kids fun.

      B. Because it is easier for kids to get into characters.

      C. Because kids like wearing the strange clothing.

      D. Because the weather is hot.

A bit of rain and wind in summer can be nice. But bad storms are a bit different.

Some of the worst storms are typhoons. Every year, about 80 typhoons hit different places around the world. The strongest ones are usually around the Pacific Ocean and the South China Sea. Most happen in July, August and September.

Why? When lots of seawater gets hot in the summer sun, it evaporates(蒸发)into the air. This makes the air hot, too. When the air gets warm enough, it starts to move higher up into the sky. Then, cooler air around it rushes in to fill the space that is left. Once the air gets warmer, it starts to move more quickly and make wind. The wind goes in circles, and it keeps moving higher in the sky. The warmer the air gets, the quicker the wind moves. And when the wind moves faster than 30 meters a second, typhoon begins.

A typhoon has two parts. One is called the "eye". This is right in the middle of a typhoon and is calm. The eye of a typhoon can be about 40 kilometers wide. In the eye,the wind does not move so fast, and there are not many clouds in the eye. The other part of a typhoon is the wall of clouds around the eye. This is where the strongest winds and hardest rains are

Typhoons are very dangerous. They blow away houses and cars. And they can also kill people! Typhoons' hard rains are bad for farmers' fields. What should you do when a typhoon hits?

• Close all windows and stay away from them. If you're told to go to a safer place, do so right away.

• Try to bring all of your things inside. Strong winds could even blow away your bike!

• Listen to the radio or watch TV for important information.

• Cut away parts of trees that can be broken off by wind to stop them from doing more damage.

      C. how many mountains there are

       D. how much seawater there is

(    )11.        the eye of the typhoon,         it moves.

      A. The nearer the air is to; the slower

      B. The stronger the air is from;the faster

      C. The nearer the air is to;the faster

       D. The farther the air is from;the slower

Having good manners is an important part of life. You know that you should never shout in public. But what about when it comes to the online world? When you use social media apps(社交媒体应用),like WeChat and Sina Weibo, you must also remember to mind your manners.

For example, sometimes I need to add a new friend on WeChat. But I haven't met him or her yet in real life. So when I send them a friend request, I explain who I am and how I got their contact information.

One of my friends likes to send really long voice messages on WeChat. It is difficult to keep up with all his messages and remember everything. I think this is a bit bad!

There are many other things that you shouldn't do on social media. Take a look and remember to do your best to be polite.

•Don't share your friends' WeChat contact information with strangers. Ask your friend first before sharing.
