今天分享《中国语言文化背景汉英双解词典》中和春节有关的几个词条，大家遇到外国友人，可以这样向他们介绍中国的春节。

春节

又称“过年”，中国民间隆重的传统节日，农历正月初一，也包括其后的几天。

Spring Festival or New Year Festival: the most important traditional festival of the Chinese people, including New Year's Day and the following few days.

守岁

阴历十二月的最后一个晚上，终夜不睡，迎接新年（新春）到来，称“守岁”。

to stay up late or all night on New Year's Eve (of the Lunar year) in order to usher in New Year.

年画

中国民间传统在过农历新年时贴的图画。表现欢乐吉庆、祝福新年的内容。年画色彩鲜明，线条单纯。河北杨柳青年画最著名。

Spring Festival pictures: are those used for celebrating the Chinese lunar new year in accordance with long Chinese folk tradition. They usually convey joy, happiness and best wishes for the new year by featuring bright colours and natural lines. The pictures painted in Yangliuqing, Hebei Province, are the most famous of all.

桃符

古代在大门上挂的两块画着门神或写着门神名字的桃木板，认为能压邪。后来在木板上面贴春联，因此借指春联。

two pieces of peach wood with pictures or name of door-god on them, hung on the gate as a talisman in old China; later the Spring Festival couplets pasted on peach wood are referred to as Spring Festival couplets

春卷

春节前后的习俗食品。用特制的薄如蝉翼的面饼，卷上韭菜、肉丝或豆沙等，油炸后透明香脆，是待客佳品。

spring roll: a special food for the Spring Festival. It is a roll of a thin sheet of dough stuffed with leek, shredded meat or sweetened bean paste. When fried, the spring roll becomes transparent, crispy and sweet smelling, really a choice food for guests.

年糕

一种食品。用黏性比较大的米或米粉蒸成的糕，是农历过年的应时食品。“糕”与“高”谐音，含“年年高”之意，表示祝贺。

new year cake: a food made of glutinous rice flour and then steamed, “cake” and “high” are homophones in Chinese, signifying “rising higher and higher with every year.”

拜年

旧历新年相互祝贺的礼俗。一般是双方拱手作揖，并致祝辞。幼辈拜年须要跪拜。现春节互访亲友时仍称“拜年”。

New Year greetings: a practice on lunar New Year, by bowing to each other with both hands clasped before the chest and wishing each other a happy New Year. The juniors should go  down on their knees and bow to the seniors. Nowadays people who pay visits to their friends and relatives during the Spring Festival are said to do “拜年”, that is, “pay New Year calls”.

压岁钱

民间风俗。

①旧俗。农历除夕以彩绳穿钱，放在床脚。

②除夕夜，长辈给小辈的钱，常压在枕头下。

① a string of coins threaded on a coloured cord and put at the foot of the bedstead on the lunar New Year's Eve.

② money given by the parents on the lunar New Year's  Eve to their children as a New Year gift to be treasured under the pillow.
