Afterword
The Nankai Project, 1981-2013
Solutions to some puzzles seem to hide deliberately in unlit or inaccessible places, and some of the most basic and enduring puzzles regarding Shakespeare have long been tracked back to the lost years of the Dark Theaters in London, 1592-1594. And there they have remained.
Shakespeare's metamorphosis in those two years is breathtaking; we can see that. And we can see that the Shakespeare puzzles must involve creation and genesis. So the first question to ask is, “Shakespeare was unimportant going into the dark and very important when he came out...how did that happen?”
In 1982 I was asked that at Nankai University in Tianjin, China, on a beautiful spring day early in the afternoon. I was standing with my back to the windows in the stately old Main Classroom Building.
“Well, we don't know,” I said. “Nobody knows. He wrote for the Earl of Southampton, long, ornate, Ovidian poems, but beyond that, there's really no record. I'm sorry.”
(The looks of disappointment will be with me to the grave; my embarrassment will be with me longer).
“I will try to find out for you,” I promised.
So after 30 years, my old friends and university, and accompanied once again with my apologies, this little book is for you all, late but dutifully delivered.
Inevitably this work, and any like it, will be riddled with errors. But the fundamental components here are sound: Shakespeare and his career followed roughly this two-year arc through these people and these places, and that passage was the making of him. For any errors or omissions, I apologize. My deepest thanks for such an interesting project to have puzzled over and played with for so long. It has enriched my life and I am grateful.
