英语轻松学 | 20组易混词辨析

两个单词发音相似或相同时，很容易混淆二者而用错词。下面列出了一些这类容易用混的单词，对有些单词给出了记忆方法。

1. allude, elude

allude表示“暗指”、“暗示”；elude表示“使困惑”、“逃避”。

I never allude to that unpleasant matter.

我从不暗指那件不愉快的事。

The name of the tune eludes me.

那个曲子的名字总是让我困惑不解。

She managed to elude the police.

她设法逃过了警察的追捕。

联想记忆：If something eludes you it escapes you.

2. breach, breech

breach作动词表示“打破”，作名词表示“缺口”；breech表示“臀部”、“后膛”。

3. canvas, canvass

canvas表示“帆布”；canvass表示“拉选票”、“征求意见”。

4. confidant, confident

confidant表示“密友”；confident表示“确信的”、“自信的”。

5. council, counsel

council表示“议会”、“委员会”；counsel表示“建议”，既可作名词又可作动词。

6. decease, disease

decease表示“死亡”；disease表示“疾病”。

7. dependant, dependent

dependant是名词，表示“受养者”、“依附者”；dependent是形容词，表示“依靠的”、“依赖的”。

The child is her dependent.

8. elicit, illicit 

elicit表示“引出”、“探出”；illicit表示“非法的”、“禁止的”。

I managed to elicit the man’s name.

9. eligible, illegible

eligible表示“合格的”、“合适的”；illegible表示“字迹不清的”、“难以辨认的”。

10. eminent, imminent

eminent表示“著名的”；imminent表示“临近的”。

11. forgo, forego

forgo表示“放弃”；forego表示“走在……之前”。

I decided to forgo the pudding.

我决定放弃布丁。

I will ignore the foregoing remarks.

我将不理睬先前的评论。

12. hoard, horde

hoard表示“贮存”、“贮藏”，既可作名词又可作动词；horde表示“一大群”。

13. idol, idle

idol表示“偶像”、“神像”；idle表示“懒惰的”、“无所事事的”。

the idol of the United supporters

He’s an idle layabout.

14. loath, loathe

loath表示“不愿意的”；loathe词尾有e，表示“憎恨”。

I am loath to change it.

我不愿意改变它。

I loathe ironing.

我讨厌熨衣服。

15. precede, proceed

precede表示“在……之前”；proceed表示“继续进行”。

16. prescribe, proscribe

prescribe表示“开处方”、“指定”，proscribe表示“禁止”。

17. principal, principle

principal作形容词表示“主要的”、“最重要的”，作名词表示“校长”；principle表示“原则”、“原理”。

18. sceptic, septic

sceptic表示“怀疑论者”，septic表示“受感染的”。

19. vain, vein

vain表示“徒劳的”、“自负的”；vein表示“静脉”、“风格”。

a vain attempt to negotiate a truce

联想记忆：To be vain is very arrogant, but a vein is a blood vessel.

20. wander, wonder

wander表示“漫步”；“wonder”表示“想知道”。

She wandered aimlessly about the house.

I wonder what happened.
