孔子名言英译10则

今天是孔诞日，是温习《论语》的好时机。为大家分享几则孔子名言的英译，摘自《中国古代经典名句英译》。这本书由南开大学的刘士聪、谷启楠教授选译，最近即将发起重印，感谢广大读者的厚爱！借此次重印挖改机会，两位译者又对书中的部分译文进行了修改打磨，为他们的认真精神点赞！

见义不为，无勇也。

（《论语•为政》）
a. If one remains indifferent to the call of a just cause, he is a coward.
b. If one takes no action at the call of a just cause, he is a coward.
义：合乎正义的事情 righteousness; a just cause为：做 to act; to take action; to do

君子耻其言而过其行。

（《论语•宪问》）
A man of honor believes it is a disgrace to say more and do less.
耻：以……为耻 to take sth. as a disgrace

不迁怒，不贰过。

（《论语•雍也》）
Never take your anger out on anyone else, and never make the same mistake a second time.
迁：转移 to take out on贰：重复；犯同样的错误 to make the same mistake a second time

君子欲讷于言而敏于行。

（《论语•里仁》）
An honorable man weighs his words before he speaks, but he is quick in action. 
讷：出言迟缓；谨慎 to weigh one's words before he speaks敏：敏捷 quick

众恶之，必察焉；众好之，必察焉。

（《论语•卫灵公》）
When a person is disliked by everyone, you must find out why; when a person is liked by everyone, you must find out why. 
恶：憎恶 to dislike好：喜欢 to like

人无远虑，必有近忧。          （《论语•卫灵公》）
If one does not take a long view of things, he will be plagued by imminent worries.

居之无倦，行之以忠。

（《论语•颜渊》）
Do not slack off on your duties and execute orders to the letter.
居之：担任职务 to take official duties行之：执行命令 to carry out orders

三人行，必有我师焉。
（《论语•述而》）
a. When I am in the company of two others, I can always find something to learn from them.
b. In the company of two others, I can always find one worthy of being my teacher.

温故而知新，可以为师矣。
（《论语·为政》）
If one can attain new understanding by reviewing old knowledge, he can qualify as a teacher. 
温故：复习旧知识  to review old knowledge知新：有心体会  to attain new understanding; to add new dimension to understanding

子在川上曰：“逝者如斯夫，不舍昼夜。”
 （《论语•子罕》） The Master, standing by the river, said, “Time passes by like this, flowing away day and night.”
