The sensitive conservation of the Qing Dynasty Keyuan Garden showcases the art and science of safeguarding traditional Chinese designed landscapes. The project has reverted years of inappropriate intervention in both the gardens and the architecture using a well-chosen combination of vernacular and contemporary techiniques and materials.

The careful protection of ancient trees and plantings and the recovery of lost features such as stone bridge achieved a holistic balance between natural and built elements. The site has become a hub of cultural transmission, providing technical training in ancient building crafts during the course of the restoration work, as well as on-going educational activities related to traditional music and arts to the general public.

The project restores not only the garden's internal harmony, but also its place in the life of Suzhou and its renowned landscape tradition.

In the gardens, besides buildings looming behind dense groves of trees, what most frequently meets the eye are winding paths that seemingly lead to nowhere, as it would appear to new visitors. There, a path seems to end, but all of a sudden, a new world is rolled out before you: pavilions, rock formations, spring water -- all combining to provide a pleasant surprise!

Private gardens south of the Yangtze River are a world of curving lines. In Zhuangzheng Garden in Suzhou, corridors zigzag along a stream, only to be interrupted at intervals by pavilions partly overhanging the water. The upturned corners of the roofs are like flying birds with their wings widespread, giving a sense of motion to a still picture.

Even the trees are curving: the weeping willows with branches cascading down to touch the water; ancient trees of hundreds of years with gnarling old branches; numerous dragon-claw trees, entwining vines, and plum trees with beautifully arched sparse branches. All proclaim the beauty of this curving world.

Rock formations play an important role in the construction of a Chinese-style garden. Without them, a garden could not be considered an authentic Chinese-style garden. Western tourists may find that in a Chinese-style garden there are no sculptures -- as often seen in a European garden.

Gardens in the south are mostly small in size. To evoke a sense of space, the use of "borrowing a distant view" is of special significance. It enables a visitor to look outside the garden to enjoy a new and greater vista, and to acquire a feeling of spaciousness, despite being in a physically small place.

Windows are very important in this aspect. In Chinese horticulture, windows are always designed in the shape of a fan and referred to as "convenience windows." Through the windows, visitors can view the picturesque bamboo groves and mountains outside. In fact, garden designers bestow these windows with another name -- "absorbent windows," through which the sights of different places interact, thus setting the landscape of the garden in motion. More interestingly, through the windows, visitors may see different views at different angles, and thus the composition of the garden becomes infinitely enlarged.
