Dean’s Message 2019

Students, Parents, Colleagues, welcome to our graduation ceremony!

First of all, congratulations to all students and parents sitting here today!

Congratulations to all the teachers that have dedicated your lives to cultivate the exceptional talent assembled here today! You have earned the respect and gratitude of all of us!

亲爱的同学们，家长们，学院同事们，欢迎来到我们今年的毕业典礼！

首先，我要对我们今天参加毕业典礼的同学们和家长们致以最热烈的祝贺！

然后，我也要向我们所有将一生奉献给了立德树人、培养了在座各位卓越人才的老师们致以祝贺，您的付出值得我们所有人的尊敬与感谢。

This maybe your last day as a student!  These last few years were probably the best in your lives, full of hope, happiness and friendship, but also hard work and active learning.  By graduating, you have successfully reached a very important milestone in your lives, one that will change your future, open new doors, opportunities and challenges.

今天可能是你作为学生的最后一天！过去的几年可能是你人生中最精彩一段时光了，它充满了希望，欢乐，友谊，更多的还有努力奋斗、上下求索。今天你毕业了，你成功地踏过了你人生中一个非常重要的里程碑式的节点，你的未来自此改变，并为你们开启新的大门、机遇和挑战。

At our university and our School, you have absorbed a great deal of knowledge, information, moral values and skills.  Now it is time to show the world how good you are as an SYSU graduate and how well prepared an information professional you are as a School of Information Management graduate.  I want you to accept the new challenges with the pride of knowing that you come from one of the best universities in China and you were taught by some of the best information teachers in the country, if not in the world.

你们在这里度过了充实、忙碌而愉快的大学生活；汲取了大量的知识、信息、品德价值观和技能。现在是时候向世界展示你们作为中山大学学子，作为资讯管理学院毕业生的专业能力了。你们毕业于中国最好的大学之一，接受了国内乃至国外最好的教师的教育，希望你能怀着这份自豪来接受新的挑战。

You have earned a celebration, your exams are finished and I know that these past few days have been filled with joy.  Now you join an exceptionally talented and influential group – the graduates and alumni of SYSU.  You have formed friendships and partnerships during your period of study with your fellow students and your teachers. Cultivate these friendships so that they will last a lifetime and you can create successful professional networks that will support you in the future.  And keep in touch with your old School of Information Management, we need your friendship, support and sponsorship in the future.

我知道大家都忙着参加各类庆祝活动，也完成所有的考试，这几天充满欢乐。现在你又加入了一个杰出而颇具影响力的团队 - 中山大学校友会。在校期间你们与同学和老师建立起了友谊。要珍惜这些朋友，让这份友谊伴随终生，你们还可以构建起有利于自己未来发展的人脉。希望大家与母院——资讯管理学院保持联系，未来我们也需要你们的友谊和支持。

Our discipline, the discipline of information is one of the fastest growing and developing in the information society we live in today.  Never before were information professionals so needed and in demand.  We all belong to the same discipline: librarians, archivists, information managers, information systems developers and information scientists.  Be proud of your education and your discipline. No information, no life!

我们的学科——信息学科，是在当今这个我们生活的信息社会里势头最好、发展最快的学科之一，信息专业人才从未像今天如此被需要，被渴求。图书馆员，档案学人，信息管理者，信息系统开发者，和信息科学家们，我们都归属于同一个学科。希望各位都为自己接受到的教育还有你的学科都感到由衷自豪。无信息，不人生！

In fact, since our School was founded, our graduates have provided leadership in librarianship, archive management, data science, information systems and information management in Guangdong and all over the country.  Follow their example, serve your country, your family and determine your own professional path so that you yourself can be a happy, productive and a proud professional.  The next few years will be a voyage of self-discovery, identifying which professional challenges most interest you.  This may be a daunting perspective now, but I am sure you will all do extremely well and make your families, your friends and even us – your old professors – very proud.  Take these challenges with determination, persistence and courage.  Dare thinking that you are the best, dare thinking you can be the best, be the best and make us all proud of you.

自资讯管理学院成立以来，我们的毕业生在广东省和全国各地的图书馆、档案管理、数据科学、信息系统和信息管理等领域一直处于领先地位。希望大家以此为榜样，为国家为人民服务。找到自己的职业道路，成为一个成果丰硕、快乐而自豪的专业人士。未来几年将是一次自我发现的旅程，你需要去探索攀登职业发展中最让你心动的挑战与高峰。现在看来可能有点令人望而生畏，但我相信你们都会做得很好，让你们的家人、朋友和我们这些老师们都为你们由衷自豪。希望你们坚定、坚持和勇敢地迎接挑战。要勇于相信自己是最好的，也要相信你可以精益求精。做到最好，今天你以母校为荣，明天母校以你为荣。

Also, a word of appreciation for you family who made it possible for you to be here today.  Do not forget them in your success.  Do not forget in your voyage to success.  Your family has been there for you in the past, you must be there for them in the future.

此外，还要感谢家人，是他们让你们能在今天站在这里。饮水思源，不论过去还是将来，不要忘记在通往成功的旅途中，家人都一直陪伴着你们

Finally, a small piece of news that you will be the first ones to know. Our School is undergoing an international accreditation process for our 3 academic postgraduate programmes by the Chartered Institute of Libraries and Information Professionals, which is England’s information professional association and is renowned internationally.  It is a leading professional body for librarians, information specialists and knowledge managers. Two of the assessors - Helen Berry and Carolynn Rankin will carry out the inspection of our courses today and tomorrow.  If we are successful, we will be the first School of our field in the country and in East Asia to acquire this accreditation. This will substantially increase the international value of your courses.

最后，讲一个新闻，这是给你们的独家消息。我们学院正为在3个硕士专业进行英国图书馆与情报专家学会国际认证。英国图书馆与情报专家学会是国际知名图书馆员、信息学专家和知识管理人员的专业机构。两位评审员海伦·贝瑞Helen Berry和卡洛琳·兰基Carolynn Rankin将在今明两天对我们的课程进行调研。如果成功通过，我们将成为国内和东亚地区第一所获得该认证的学院。这将大大提高我们课程的国际价值。

But … you do not want to hear me for too long.
