Biden enters the 2024 race with polls showing that voters are less than enthusiastic about the prospects of either him or Trump returning to the White House. Only half of Democrats, or 47%, said in a poll released last week that Biden should run again in 2024. Trump, 76, fared only slightly better: 44% of Republicans said they don’t want him to run for reelection.

But the report also revealed a 4.9% increase in the personal consumption expenditures price index, excluding food and energy prices. Economists surveyed by Bloomberg had expected a 4.7% increase. That means that consumers have remained resilient and are expected to use excess savings and purchasing power to make the economic contraction short and shallow. And a strong jobs market, with an unemployment rate at 3.5%, also is expected to underpin growth.

The popular panda’s trip was closely followed online. People shared screenshots tracking Ya Ya’s flight path into Shanghai, which was reported by Chinese state media and claimed four of the top 10 trending topics on the social media platform Weibo. An image from Chinese broadcaster Phoenix News was particularly popular among Chinese social media users. It showed Ya Ya relieving herself before the trip and leaving the poop as a present for the zoo. The zoo held a farewell party for Ya Ya earlier in April and said it would miss the panda. Her departure marks the end of a 20-year loan agreement with the Chinese Association of Zoological Gardens.

The upgrade is intended to prepare for industry growth, increase storage capacity, order fulfillment speed and workplace safety, as well as reduce physically demanding work and ergonomic stressors on employees. The facility, which employs 1,460 people, is the main hub for GM Genuine and ACDelco parts distribution, packaging around 756,000 parts per day. GM plans to implement three different technology systems to improve workplace safety. General Motors (GM) will install three different automated technology systems in its Customer Care and Aftersales Davison Road Processing Center in Burton, Michigan, to enhance warehouse operations, increase storage capacity, and improve workplace safety. The first system, an Automated Storage and Retrieval System (ASRS), can store up to 46,000 processed parts and reduce the amount of lifting by an employee. The second system, an Automated Mini-Load System, can store up to 146,000 parts and bring sorted parts to employees to reduce walking and repetitive movements. The third system, the Conveyance, Sortation and Palletization System, will implement 3.5 miles of total conveyance to move parts along to various workstations. The systems will be installed starting in November 2022 and be operational by April 2025.

The news has prompted an angry response from the United Auto Workers (UAW) union, with UAW President Shawn Fain calling Stellantis' "push to cut thousands of jobs while raking in billions in profits...disgusting." Stellantis owns the Jeep, Ram, Chrysler, Dodge and Fiat brands. Two incentive packages would be offered to workers, including one for $50,000 for seniority members hired before 2007.
