Still, officials hit a roadblock late Thursday as a federal judge temporarily blocked the Biden administration from releasing screened and vetted migrants from Border Patrol without court notices. Meantime, new rules will limit asylum claims by migrants who traverse other countries en route to the US-Mexico border and closely track migrant families released into the US during the deportation process. The asylum rule, though, quickly drew a lawsuit from the American Civil Liberties Union and others who said it echoes Trump-era policy, breaks with US and international law and puts vulnerable migrants in harm’s way.

A survey of 2,000 UK adults conducted by Finder last week showed that 8% had already used ChatGPT for financial advice, while 19% said they would consider doing so. Yet a much bigger 35% said they would not consider using the chatbot to help them make decisions about their money. Jon Ostler, Finder’s CEO said the “safe and recommended” approach for individual investors was to conduct their own research or speak to a qualified financial adviser. He cautioned that it was too early for investors to trust AI with their finances.

Google announced the move at its Google I/O developer conference on Wednesday, a week after Microsoft removed the waitlist for its competing Bing chatbot. In addition to opening Bard up to people in 180 English-speaking countries and territories, it added Japanese and Korean chat abilities as part of a 40-language expansion plan. It also added options to export Bard chat data to the Google Docs word processing tool and the Google Sheets spreadsheet. It's a revolution in what computers can offer, combining a wealth of information with a natural interface. Chatbots have shown skills in writing poetry, answering philosophy questions, constructing software, passing exams and offering tax advice. But modern chatbots also are prone to making up data, and their backers are working hard to keep them from contributing to problems like abuse, misinformation, hacking and sexual harassment. And those are just near-term worries. Today's AI is powerful enough to trigger fears about wiping out white-collar jobs and undermining civilization.

Yet CNN also found itself at the center of a political and media controversy after Trump steamrolled moderator Kaitlan Collins’s efforts to fact-check a series of false statements he made in front of a crowd that was vocally supportive of the Republican. During the event, Trump repeated his false claims about his loss in the 2020 election, waved away charges of sexual misconduct. CNN media reporter Oliver Darcy in his newsletter noted that new network CEO Chris Licht was “facing a fury of criticism — both internally and externally over the event.”

Michigan will no longer report COVID testing data, including how many tests are done and percent positivity, beginning the week of May 15. Health officials noted that data had considerable limitations for some time since the expansion of at-home self-testing, which didn’t require reporting. The state will continue to track infections using emergency department visits, wastewater surveillance, case and hospitalization rates, and mortality rates beyond the ending of the public health emergency. Health officials will still track COVID hospitalizations through April 2024 as a means to assess community levels. COVID deaths will continue to be reported using death certificate data. They’ll use a new metric -- the percent of deaths that are COVID-associated -- and report it weekly.
