作为在深圳的首个个展，蔡磊为飞地艺术空间及观众带来2021年的全新创作，作品囊括了过去多年的几个代表系列，较为完整地呈现出艺术家的创作脉络。与过去的问题和方向相同，展览以《间量》为题，蔡磊持续其对空间与错觉的深入探讨。蔡磊成长的年代，中国工业文明疾速变迁，城市化突飞猛进，当庞大的建筑成为某种集体经验的缩影，那些用混凝土堆积的城市文明在时间的冲刷下会留下什么？毛坯房 Unfinished Home20210812

2021对空间及其能量无限迷恋的蔡磊，带着这样的问题展开工作，将压缩空间作为作品的本体，思考空间体量的变化与其象征意义——城市建筑被压缩成“毛坯房”式的水泥浮雕，未名空间被降维成几乎平面的镂空捏塑，长而曲折的楼梯被提炼，筑成与人等高的纪念碑式雕塑……其中，《毛坯房》系列是蔡磊近年重要的系列之一，水泥材料的浮雕及雕塑是将物理空间透视压缩的结果，它们记录着事物背后的原型。在此基础上，蔡磊进一步将这种压缩空间转换成架上画作（《0108#》和《0109#》），持续调动观者的感知。从“毛坯房”系列出发的作品皆呈现出失去“前景”的“背景”，剥离了人们喜欢给建筑、给生活增添的附加值，对城市中同质化的钢筋水泥进行祛魅并提出质疑：离开了精致的外壳与巨大的体量和数量，人们是否能重新辨认个体与公共生活空间的关系？
芥子虽小，然纳须弥。此次展览意图在不同的平面切开一个个空间的廊道，如《星际穿越》一般打开现有维度之上的另一层空间。而线性透视法成为艺术家凿开这种空间的工具。透视法基于视觉与空间的错位，用严谨朴素的线条在平面中建造出三维效果，让一个限定的物理空间（一幅画、一件雕塑）也能释放出强大的视觉能量。展览标题“间量”，原是一个北方人也不再常用的地方俗语，用来形容空间的大小。在蔡磊眼中，“间量”既是作品本体的量，也是作品放入展厅后肉身能够体验到的量。将一个个压缩空间嵌入展厅的过程，也是让物体的间量在不同场域发出量变的过程，正如作品所用到的材料和色彩一般，透露着克制的感性。蔡磊式的空间也带有一种戏剧张力。人可以建设和设定空间，与此相反，空间也能决定人的思维与动作。《单元》的灵感来源于艺术家在疫情期间，因无法乘坐电梯而改走楼梯，从而意识到每个单元的楼梯如一个中央神经关连着整个单元居民。这种“无形”的联系与控制常常让人忽视，只有在特殊时刻才能让人产生警觉。《自由之外》的戏剧性则来源于它的时间张力，仿佛从框架上滴落的青铜让人感受着空间的流逝，它只是被凝聚的一个时间点而已。残损、压缩、解构、延伸——看似强大的文明不过暂时，最终剩下的也只有时间与空间。

The new works extend on the artist's signature series over the past years while encapsulating his underlying creative concepts. Titled "Intermediate Capacity," the show continues Cai Lei's dedication to explore space and illusion.Cai Lei grew up with the drastic changes in China's industrial civilization development as well as the leaps of urbanization that is built upon concrete. As gigantic architecture became the epitome of a particular collective experience, what would urban civilization leave behind as physical materials got lost in time?With this question, Cai Lei dived into work motivated by his obsession with space and its energy. He creates compressed space as the body of his works. By manipulating the volume of spaces, Cai Lei contemplates the symbolic meanings behind the changes of spacial capacity. In his practice, urban architecture is compressed into concrete relieves; unnamed rooms are flattened to hollow, almost 2D "sculpture"; winding stairways are taken out of context and become miniature monuments…Among these, "Unfinished Home" is one of Cai Lei's most important series over the past few years. Physical space is squeezed dimensionally into cement sculpture and relief, returning to architectural archetypes. Lately, he further transformed these compressed spaces onto canvas (0108# (2021) and 0109# (2021)), keeping challenging viewers' perception. Cai Lei's works that stem out of the "Unfinished Home" series reveal the background without any foreground, stripping away the decorative or attached values that have been constantly added to buildings by human beings. These works throw concrete jungle into question — without exquisite looks or grand quantity and size of buildings, can we recover the relationship between individuals and public living space?As the Chan saying goes, little seeds contain big universe. The exhibition is an experimentation to cut through various planes and, similar to Interstellar, to open up another layer of space above the existing dimensions. And Cai Lei attempts to achieve this by manipulating linear perspective, which is based on the dislocation between physical space and human eyes. Linear perspective allows three-dimensional illusion to rise from a two-dimensional plane. Using rigorous and clean lines, Cai Lei is able to release the spacial energy of a framed physical space, no matter a painting or a sculpture. The Chinese title of "Intermediate Capacity" was a dialect slang used in Northern China to describe the size of a space. Here the title not only refers to the volume of the artworks themselves, but also the volume of those compressed spaces that one can feel in the gallery. As Cai Lei's works come into the gallery and become intermediated by the gallery, their spacial capacity changes too. Together with the artist's austere materials and monochromic color palette, the changing "intermediate capacity" entails a sense of restrained sensibility. Cai Lei's spaces also bring theatrical tensions. People can build and define spaces, while spaces in turn can determine people's thinking and behaviors. Block (2021) was created during the pandemic when the artist had to use stairways instead of elevators to maintain social distance. He soon realized that the stairways function as a central neural system that connects the entire building. The "invisible" connection and control are usually overlooked but can make people alert at special moments. In his other work, Beyond Freedom (2021), the theatrical tension is generated by its timeness: the bronze drops almost drip from the frames as if frozen in time. Broken, compressed, deconstructed, and broadened. The seemingly powerful civilization is just a moment in history; in the end, only time and space stay. 间量 Intermediate Capacity
