WELL PARENT | FAQ About Parenting Classes
Are you curious about what happens in a positive parenting workshop? Are you worried that you might miss a session? Or are you concerned that you won't be able to handle the extra load? Read on for answers to your questions!
WHAT HAPPENS IN A PARENTING WITH POSITIVE DISCIPLINE WORKSHOP?
Each session starts with a sharing circle, where parents share what tool they tried over the last week, and how it worked for them. They share openly about struggles and successes.
We then learn about a positive discipline concept, and we learn one or two positive discipline tools for you to practice each week. The way we learn is through experiential activities, where parents gain firsthand experience about what it is like to hear common phrases or to be disciplined in traditional ways like yelling, nagging, criticism. Parents begin to understand how our behaviours actually have the opposite effect on our child than we think they will. Parents gain AWARENESS in these sessions, and awareness is the first step in changing our behaviour. Parents are also EQUIPPED with tools to take home to help prevent, handle, and reduce misbehaviour.
The last half hour of the workshop is focused on Parents Helping Parents. One parent will share a challenging situation from the last week, and together we uncover the reason ‘why’ the child is misbehaving, and then use that to brainstorm different strategies, tools, and ideas, that could be used to solve the problem. Parents find this part of the workshop INCREDIBLY helpful because most of the parents are struggling with a similar challenge. Parents learn how to use a number of different tools to prevent and manage the behaviour.
Parents come away from these workshops saying they feel relieved to know they are not alone, that they feel supported, and that they feel equipped with a whole new toolkit they can use.
I AM REALLY BUSY, AND I AM WORRIED THAT I DON’T HAVE TIME TO DO THE HOMEWORK. SHOULD I DO THE COURSE?
While I will be giving out a couple of handouts each week, it is not compulsory that you complete these, nor will it impact your learning if you don’t do them. There is also the opportunity to read the book ‘Positive Discipline’ by Jane Nelsen, but it is not a requirement to do this.
Many of the parents who have completed these workshops are busy working professionals with multiple children. Without doing any extra work, they become more AWARE of how their behaviour impacts their child, and the simple, practical tools they learn in the workshop are able to be implemented easily into their daily lives. Even these parents are seeing a BIG difference.
WHAT IF I MISS A SESSION?
For our Zoom participants, the webinars will be recorded and accessible afterward. For our in-person attendees, you can also have access to the webinar of the session you missed, however, it will be for ages 5-12 years. Many of the concepts are the same across the ages and can be applied to preschoolers as well.
WHEN WILL THE NEXT WORKSHOP SERIES BE?
Unfortunately, I will not be running any workshop series in the foreseeable future due to a new study commitment and workload. This is really your last chance to join in on these sessions.
If you want to set yourself up on the parenting journey to make your life a heck of a lot easier and way more joyful, sign up now!
Online Zoom Workshop Series starts this coming Tuesday 30 November, and the in-person in Beijing series for parents of preschoolers starts this Thursday 02 December. Scan QR code for more details.
WHAT OUR PARENTS HAVE TO SAY
MIRANDA, MOM OF 2
Positive Parenting exceeded our expectations. We had been struggling to find techniques that would work with our 8-year-old, it was more important to get the yelling under control. The course allowed us to see the world from our child’s viewpoint, understand what is going on inside their head, and how to respond to his reactions to be the most effective parent. We have implemented many of the tools taught “connection before correction" and "focusing on solutions instead of blame”. The class and exercises were very engaging which gave us the practical tools to implement the concepts and come out with a whole different perspective that has definitely shaped our relationship with our child for the better. We are also now better able to avoid escalations or quickly defuse them when they do arise. Our parenting style has become more consistently mindful. This course has made a significant difference to our home. We encourage others to try it!
You really have given our family the best gift ever, I wish we had done it sooner!! We can't thank you enough for your shared knowledge & experience.
THERESA, MOM OF 3
As a mom to 3 small children sometimes it feels impossible to do it all - work, wife, mother, manage a house, and be NICE when things get super hard with the kids. Positive Parenting with Rebecca was such a refreshing experience. Sacrificing the one night a week for 7 weeks (with my partner!) was well worth the investment of time. Because our children are worth it. The community built with other parents allowed us all to take a big sigh of relief that we are not alone in our struggles.
Rebecca employs here positive parenting techniques on us the parents (students) by having us do our own problem solving and solution making. She was patient and kind (sometimes firm and kind haha) and really provided many enlightening tools. Parenting is a challenging journey for many of us where we continue to hit our heads against a wall trying to do the same things over and over again that just do NOT work. Fighting, pushing, struggling, yelling, can be transformed by being inquisitive, curious, playful, and knowledgeable, about what is happening underneath the surface of our children’s behavior.
My husband and I have taken home many parenting hacks that have made getting into bed at night, and dressed and ready for school in the morning, a lot easier. When one tool doesn’t work, we have a rolladex of other options. Plus, we have 9 new friends all on the same journey, so we can help each other. Honestly, every parent (and teacher) of young children should take the time to understand the tools and methodology behind Positive Discipline. It’s been a game-changer for us. A huge thank you to Rebecca for sharing her deep well of wisdom and experience with us. Many lives are positively impacted by kind and patient parents who raise kind, respectful, responsible, and empowered children.
