我出生在苏格兰的格拉斯哥，在我性格形成的岁月里，我在半乡村的环境中长大。我每天早上要穿过一大片牛群才能去上小学。离开格拉斯哥艺术学院(Glasgow School of Art)后，我对陆地和水上自然环境的热爱启发了我的创作。在那里，作为一名学生，我的作品更专注于绘画的表现力。多年来，这两个领域的结合一直是我作品的一个风格特点，同时也是对更现实的图像和传统题材的探索。

我决定把展览的副标题定为“回顾展II”，因为在回顾大多数作品时，我意识到这通常是回顾过去的事件和经历，并试图表达这些事件和经历的本质。作为一个更年轻的人，我的第一个个展，以一种开玩笑的方式，也被命名为“回顾展”——我当时的作品，以略微不同的方式，也是关于过去的影响。(也许我很天真地认为，在这么小的年纪举办自己的第一次“回顾展”也很有趣:这个头衔通常只留给更年长、成名和受人尊敬的艺术家。我想我是在嘲笑艺术界的自命不凡，并没有把自己太当回事!)然而，作为一名年长的艺术家，这个头衔现在更合理了，因为这些作品跨越了几十年——

I was born in Glasgow, Scotland and in my formative years grew up in a semi-rural landscape. I had to cross a field of cows every morning to get to Primary school. A love of the natural environment on land and on the water has informed and inspired my work since leaving the Glasgow School of Art where, as a student, my work was more focused on the expressive qualities of paint. Over the years a combination of these two areas has been a characteristic of my work, as is an exploration of more realistic images and traditional subject matter. For the past 20 years I have been employed as a visual Arts teacher in International schools in Indonesia, Thailand, Sri Lanka and for the past 6 years in Xiamen. Given the short time (less than a week) for me to organise this exhibition and the nature of the gallery space I decided to limit the choice of works to works already framed and on paper. To further this I also focused on works I had in a suitcase that I brought back to Xiamen from Glasgow on my last visit to see my family. Most of the works here are evocations of places in Scotland, Australia or Indonesia. They range from sketches that were made in front of the subject to more semi-abstract poetic depictions of travels to or in environments and weather conditions. As a contrast to this work the exhibition ends with two more recent pieces for a series in which I use cloth sheets as a motif. These pieces grew out of a curiosity to explore a more traditional form of depiction, though there is still an exploration of the textural qualities of paint evident. I decided to subtitle the exhibition ‘Retrospective II’ as on reviewing most of the work I realised that it was often about looking back at past events and experiences and trying to express an essence of these. As a younger man my first solo exhibition was, in a jokey manner, also titled ‘Retrospective’ - my work at this time was, in a slightly different way, also about the influence of the past. (I, perhaps naively, thought it was also quite amusing to have my first ‘retrospective’ exhibition: at such a tender age: a title usually reserved for older, established, and respected artists. I think I was poking fun at the pretensions of the art world and not taking myself too seriously!) However, as an older artist now, the title is now more justified as the work spans several decades –

For the past 25 years I have been working in International Schools in Indonesia, Thailand, Sri Lanka and now China. In addition to primary, middle and high school art classes I have taught the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme Visual Arts course for the last 15 years. My students have gone on to study at prestigious art colleges in the USA, UK, Korea and Hong Kong.
