Here are somethings one need to be aware of when invited for dinner in Germany.

Arriving

Arrive on time. After you arrive, switch your mobile phone off or put it on silent.

Seating 座位

The head of the table and the center of the table are the most important positions, if the host is a couple, each will sit at the opposite ends of the table. Remain standing until invited to sit down.

Guten Apetit!

Before you start eating, it is best to wait for everyone to be seated. Also, you should wait for the host to say "Guten Appetit!" which means "Enjoy your meal!" before taking the first bite.

Exception: In restaurants, all foods may not arrive at the same time. If your food arrives before others, it is OK to begin eating so your meal won't get cold.

Toasting

It is better to wait for the hosts to propose a toast and/or start drinking, but you can also propose a toast yourself on some occasions.

A simple "Prost!" which means "Cheers!" is usually used to toast with beer.

"Zum Wohl!" meaning "To your health!" is usually used to toast with wine.

"Zum Wohl!"

While clinking the glasses with others for a toast, carefully look into the eyes of the person you are clinking with, from the time the glass is raised till when it is placed back on the table.

Hands

Your hands should be visible above the table, don't put them on your lap, also do not rest your elbows on the table.

Utensils 餐具

Hold the knife with the right hand, and the fork with the left hand. When you have finished eating, place the fork and knife parallel to each other across the right side of the plate with their tips pointing towards the ten O'clock position. This also means that you have finished eating. You must finish everything on your plate.

Cutting foods 切食物

If something can be cut easily, do not use a knife rather use a side of a fork. Do not cut the lettuce in a salad, just fold it with your knife and fork so that it can be picked up with your fork.
