Have you ever imagined how Shenzhen looked like 123 years ago? Well, let's take a trip back in history and see how the city has changed over the years.
We will start with a picture taken in 1898, showing Hakka villagers in Langkou village, Longhua, Shenzhen.
Below is an image captured in 1899, showing Chinese and British representatives surveying the border between the Chinese mainland and Hong Kong. The wooden monument separating them read "Xin'an County border of the Qing Dynasty".
Before being named Shenzhen, the area was called Bao'an County, and prior to being named Bao'an county, it was known as Xin'an County. In 1913, Xin'an County in Guangdong Province was renamed Bao'an County, it was governed by Nantou town (just north of Nantou overpass, Nanshan District, in the modern Shenzhen).
