Facebook says it’s clarifying its ad metrics

来源:TechCrunch

Facebook is looking to clean up and clarify the way advertisers measure their campaign performance.

Over the past couple of years, the company has had to acknowledge multiple mistakes in its ad metrics. Last fall, researchers even pointed out that Facebook’s purported reach was greater than the US Census population in every state.

So making these kinds of tweaks (and taking other steps to increase transparency) could help restore advertisers’ confidence in the company’s numbers.

Facebook laid out the changes in a blog post, and also at a press event this morning, where Vice President of Marketing Science Brad Smallwood was joined by Edward Gaffney, director of Implementation Research at ad agency GroupM. (Gaffney is part of Facebook’s Measurement Council.)

The first change comes in the way these metrics will be labelled. Facebook will now explicitly point out when an ad metric is an estimate, in development or both.

Gaffney said that advertisers are used to working with estimates, but he recalled that even in the Measurement Council there was some uncertainty around which numbers were estimated versus directly measured. So this kind of clarity is needed “to understand that an estimate is just that — it’s better than a guess, but it is not the absolute truth.”

Meanwhile, Smallwood said that it’s natural for Facebook to experiment with the most effective ways to present its data. By labeling a measurement as in development, the company is telling advertisers to expect those measurements to change. (As Gaffney put it: “Don’t build a complex model around that.”)

Some of the metrics might eventually disappear entirely if they’re not helpful to advertisers. In fact, Smallwood said Facebook plans to remove 20 of them in July because they were judged redundant, outdated, not actionable or infrequently used.

For example, he said the social reach metric (which shows how often people saw an ad accompanied with context like a comment from their friend) turned out to be not that different from a standard reach metric, and advertisers didn’t know how to use the data to improve their campaigns. So it’s getting cut.

Lastly, Smallwood said Facebook will be launching a new initiative called Measure What Matters, combining in-person events, online events and online content to help advertisers understand more about how to measure and improve their campaigns.

二、Privacy and human rights advocates are worried about Apple's imminent iCloud move in China

来源:Mashable

Apple is preparing for a big change at the end of the month: Henceforth, iCloud data belonging to users based in China will have to be stored there, in the company's new Chinese data center.

That means text message, emails, and other data stored in the cloud will be physically housed on Chinese soil. Importantly, it also means that the cryptographic keys required to unlock an iCloud account will live in China as well.

SEE ALSO: Here's what we think about Apple's HomePod

Previously, as Reuters points out, those keys had been stored in the United States. Whenever Chinese authorities have sought access to a user's account in the past for one reason or another, they'd have to go through the processes set forth in the U.S. legal system.

Moving the keys to a data center in China means that authorities can seek access to iCloud accounts using the local legal system instead. This is a worry to human rights and privacy advocates, who fear what the country's looser privacy restrictions and the broad powers held by local authorities might mean.

"Even very early in a criminal investigation, police have broad powers to collect evidence," Jeremy Daum, an attorney and research fellow based in Beijing, told Reuters.  "[They are] authorized by internal police procedures rather than independent court review, and the public has an obligation to cooperate."

China's data privacy laws also offer little protection when the authorities in question are investigating certain criminal offenses, including some that many countries would define as political suppression.

Two Chinese citizens were jailed as dissidents in 2002 for distributing pro-democracy writings and other materials. It was later discovered that the damning evidence had been provided to the Chinese government by Yahoo, prompting harsh criticism. The tech company later apologized and settled a lawsuit brought by the families of Chinese activists.

While plenty has changed in China since the events of 2002 — that was more than a decade before the country's longtime ban on video game consoles finally lifted, for example — concerns remain.

Some have criticized Apple's decision, but the company contends it tried to keep this from happening.

"While we advocated against iCloud being subject to these laws, we were ultimately unsuccessful," a statement provided to Reuters reads. Apple claims that moving iCloud data and encryption keys to China is preferable to shutting down iCloud services there completely, a move that the company says would add to the risk of user security and privacy being compromised.

Apple maintains that it alone controls the encryption keys, regardless of the nation in which they're based. Even its Chinese partner — the state-owned Guizhou, which helped to get the data center established — doesn't have access.

Of course, that's exactly what a company concerned with its own interests would say in a situation like this. Apple's partnership with Guizhou is a necessity; without it, the U.S. company wouldn't be able to store data in China under the new rules. That, in turn, could cut off Apple's access to the large Chinese market of more than 1 billion potential customers.

三、Trump Uses Facebook Exec Tweet To Call Media "Fake News"

President Trump approvingly passed along comments from Facebook ads Vice President Rob Goldman on Saturday, using Goldman's remarks about the Kremlin-linked chaos campaign on Facebook to call reporters covering the situation, the "Fake News Media."

Goldman, reflecting on special counsel Robert Mueller's indictment of 13 individuals linked to a Russian troll farm, took the opportunity to call out reporters covering the developments.

"Most of the coverage of Russian meddling involves their attempt to effect [sic] the outcome of the 2016 US election. I have seen all of the Russian ads and I can say very definitively that swaying the election was *NOT* the main goal," Goldman said at the start of a two-day tweetstorm, spanning Friday and Saturday.

"The majority of the Russian ad spend happened AFTER the election. We shared that fact, but very few outlets have covered it because it doesn’t align with the main media narrative of Tump and the election," Goldman added.

Trump seized on these comments, using them to continue his attempt to discredit the news media's efforts to report on a Kremlin-linked campaign to influence the 2016 US presidential election and sow discord in its aftermath.

"The Fake News Media never fails. Hard to ignore this fact from the Vice President of Facebook Ads, Rob Goldman!" Trump said in one tweet quote tweeting Goldman's remarks.

"'I have seen all of the Russian ads and I can say very definitively that swaying the election was *NOT* the main goal.' Rob Goldman Vice President of Facebook Ads," Trump wrote in a subsequent tweet.

On the same day Goldman sought to blame the media, Facebook and Instagram were mentioned 41 times in Mueller's indictment, far outpacing Twitter, YouTube, and Paypal.

A spokesperson for Sen. Mark Warner, vice chair of the Senate Intelligence Committee, said on Twitter that focusing on the ad spend Goldman referenced is "missing big picture."

Asked to comment, a Facebook spokesperson pointed BuzzFeed News to a subsequent tweet from Goldman where the Facebook VP said, "I am only speaking here about the Russian behavior on Facebook. That is the only aspect that I observed directly."
