To globetrotters and BAM-lievers, today Ballistic Propaganda Machine presents an exclusive look behind the scenes of shiny renders and tourist pictures, giving you an insight into the process of design. About a year ago, April 2019 the biggest indoor waterfall, a park and commercial center, the Jewel, opened in Changi Airport Singapore, for which Peter Walker and Partners did the landscape design. Among the many attractions at the Jewel, a special eye catcher is the Mirror Maze in the Canopy Park. The Mirror Maze is the newest creation in the series of mirror gardens research and design that Peter Walker initiated and conducted with BAM.

One of the most famous works by BAM and Peter Walker and Partners (PWP) is the Finite-Infinite Garden designed for Beijing Garden Expo in 2013, but the collaboration and research on mirror gardens continues into other projects between BAM and PWP.

The idea of the mirror continued beyond the Beijing Garden Expo. In 2017 PWP once again worked closely with BAM do develop the design for the Singapore Mirror Maze. This time numerous concept prototypes were produced by both offices, in the search of creating a different kind of public garden experience. The original plan for the public space of the Jewel envisioned a series of different mirror gardens. BAM developed several of these concepts to the level of detailed construction drawing. Not all prototypes made it into the final design of the Canopy Garden, but it did create for a rich design research and development that we’ll be sharing with you today.

BAM reinvents the classic idea of the mirror maze by using an orthogonal grid and adding revolving one way mirror doors into the concept. Alternation of see through glass, regular mirrors and one way mirrors adds a suspenseful intrigue to the exploration of the maze and creates a routing that alters as the visitors go through the maze.

A custom designed revolving door, stops when people approach, reorienting the maze, when people leave the vicinity the door commences rotating again creating a dizzying effect from afar.
Detailed to blend in with the mirror walls, the structural elements and the safety sensors are hidden in the sandwich element of laminated glass panels. Put together these panels made of low iron ultra white glass have a very high reflectivity creating a mirror like effect.

The big challenge during the detailing of the revolving doors was to maintain the aesthetics of a clear, undisturbed mirror surface while incorporating the structural elements, rotation mechanism and safety sensors. BAM developed two kinds of doors: a frameless one with a stainless steel roof, and another one with a glass roof and a frame.

Building upon the original concept of the Finite-Infinite classic, the Reflection Garden has two rows of mirrors subtly following the bend of the Jewel. A pattern of shrubs shapes the flowing routing and expands into an endless field in the mirrors that lights up with starlights at night through in-built LEDs in the pavement.

The Kaleidoscope Garden, a little gem simple in its setup, creates endless reflections of the viewers perceiving themselves. Over the years this has been a core theme driving the reflection garden research, inspired by the famous artist Dan Graham underscoring the importance of the viewer who sees himself in the artwork, for without the viewer art does not exist.

The arbor maze is based on the classic mirror maze following a triangular lay-out for the mirror placement. BAM developed clean and simple detailing to maximize a seamless flow of reflections and create an illusion of and endless multidimensional space.
