Overview

Asian Development Bank (ADB) is an international development finance institution headquartered in Manila, Philippines and is composed of 68 members, 49 of which are from the Asia and Pacific region. ADB only hires nationals of its 68 members.


The position is assigned in the Guarantees and Syndications Unit (GSU) within the Private Sector Operations Department (PSOD), and will be based in the People’s Republic of China Resident Mission (PRCM) in Beijing.GSU supports all commercial cofinancing activities of ADB and provides support to sovereign credit enhancement products, including for state owned enterprises.


PSOD provides investment capital to private sector entrepreneurs, corporates, and project sponsors, as well as financial intermediaries, such as banks, throughout developing Asia. It catalyzes, structures, and funds investments in privately held and state-sponsored companies across a wide range of industry sectors. Its emphasis is on commercially viable transactions that generate financial returns while also delivering on ADB's organization-wide mission to promote environmentally sustainable and inclusive economic growth.


Objective and Purpose of the Assignment


The Investment Specialist (Syndications) will support the mobilization of financing from commercial sources (banks, development finance institutions, institutional investors, and other entities) for ADB’s private sector debt transactions. The candidate will support the lead GSU syndicator on all syndication related activities during transaction origination and execution phases. The transactions will cover a range of sectors including but not limited to infrastructure (project and corporate finance), financial institutions, agriculture, healthcare and education. In addition to transaction syndication support the candidate will also provide support to build and maintain relationships with co-financiers and other programs and initiatives within GSU.

Scope of Work


  • The ideal candidate will have a demonstrated successful track record of working in emerging market syndicated loan and or project finance markets. The candidate should have strong modelling skills, be adept at using Bloomberg and other sources of market pricing and information.

  • In addition, the candidate will need to be a go getter with a personality that can facilitate strong cooperation and with other financiers and work & communicate efficiently with internal and external stakeholders. The candidate will need to have strong interpersonal skills and a track record of using initiative and thinking outside the box.


Detailed Tasks and/or Expected Output


a. Project Management

  • Work with lead syndicator to advise project teams on deal structure and pricing; propose and discuss syndication strategy for individual syndications and develop a list of prospective co-financiers. Conduct deal-specific market soundings, review company’s economic and financial information for new transactions.

  • Contribute to the syndication process with international, regional, and local commercial banks, development financial institutions, , funds and institutional investors. Develop and maintain relationships with these investors and identify investor behavior and needs and apply those to determine feasibility of syndications. Prepare deal teasers, term sheets, information memoranda, executive summaries, and other reports for the investor market in collaboration with relevant origination teams.

  • Follow international lending markets and banking activities to understand and anticipate trends. Play a material role in the investor approval and ultimately the documentation process for the syndicated financing, especially managing the communication with co-financiers during the due diligence and approval phase and fronting the lender Q&A process. This can be a coordinating or a leading role depending on syndication products and the other financiers on the project.

  • Pitching to and managing relationships with both clients and co-financiers.
  • Work with investment staff to identify syndication opportunities.

b. Knowledge Management

  • Contributes to efforts to increase awareness of ADB’s mobilization products among other financing parties and ADB Regional Department staff;

  • Collects relevant pricing data in support of pricing of private sector debt
    transactions. Supports the GSU pricing validation exercise.

  • Participates in preparing staff instructions and other materials on mobilization products; and
  • Contributes to preparing related in-house seminars and workshops, updates of commercial financing transaction briefs, manuals, brochures, and other publications.
    Minimum Qualification Requirements
  • Master's degree, or equivalent, in a business or finance related field; university degree combined with specialized experience in similar organization/s may be considered in lieu of a Master’s degree.
  • At least 7 years of relevant professional work experience preferably with a leading international bank or other financial institution in emerging markets, including broad exposure to the syndicated loan market both project & corporate finance, capital markets.
  • Experience in in project, corporate and/or structured debt finance, including hands-on experience in originating, structuring, executing, or working with syndicated debt, project finance transactions for infrastructure, PPP, corporate and/or financial sector debt transactions
  • Extensive experience with loan documentation and credit issues for private sector companies and project financings in developing countries.
  • Experience market intelligence research tools including Dealogic – Loan Analytics, Bloomberg and market publications and bookrunning platforms such as Debt Domain, Intralinks and Syndtrak.
  • Strong team player, with demonstrated capacity for hard work. 
  • Able to manage multiple tasks concurrently, prioritize effectively and adhere to deadlines while always paying attention to details. 
  • Clear, accurate articulation of issues, problems and solutions. 
  • Use of tact, diplomacy and good interpersonal skills in internal and external communications. 
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills in both English and Mandarin with strong editing skills.
