内容简介

Historical linguists study the ways languages change and develop over time. While many lessons for the specific domain of language have emerged from this enterprise, one generally applicable lesson learned from historical linguistics is that change is inevitable. In this respect, language is much like life, for the inevitability of change is a hallmark of virtually all that is human. In this presentation, I start with some specifics about language change and move from there to present a general view of how time affects a variety of human institutions. Eventually, however, despite the importance of recognizing the time dimension, I argue that this importance holds only from the scientific side, and is valid really only for historical linguists, and for historians more generally; for speakers, and for individuals more generally, the only time that matters is the here and now -- any inferences that might be drawn about the passage of time are epiphenomenal in nature and do not reflect a direct awareness of the effects of the passage of time on language or other aspects of humanity.
