Under the guidance of China-ASEAN Environmental Cooperation Center and the Center for Environmental Education and Communications of Ministry of Ecology and Environment as well as the great support from Education Forum for Asia and Ecological Development Union International, the China Academic Committee for Responsible Management Education was formally established in May 2021 by experts and scholars from colleges and universities in China. Chinese higher education institutions have responded to the Principles for Responsible Management Education (PRME) initiated by the United Nations Global Compact and the Carbon Neutral Science Technology and Innovation Action Plan for Higher Education released by the Ministry of Education in July 2021, the China Academic Committee for Responsible Management Education has organized the Youth Responsible Management and Development Education Academic Speech Contest as part of the "Responsible Management and Youth Development Education" Special Session at the Education Forum for Asia 2021 Annual Conference from 18-19 September 2021 in Chengdu. Topics related to responsible management education and sustainability will be presented by young students in speech presentations.
In order to ensure the fairness and impartiality of the selection process, the organizing committee of the Special Session on Responsible Management Education and Youth Development has designed the following procedures:
Participants and language divisions
1. Participants in the contest
The contest is intended to be run simultaneously in three categories, depending on who is participating.
(1) Ph.D. and Postgraduate Group: for full-time doctoral and master's students in universities and colleges
(2) Undergraduate and College group: for full-time undergraduate students in universities and colleges
(3) High School and Vocational School Group: for current high school students, vocational school students
2. Language of the contest
Each group has been further divided into Chinese and English. According to the language category of the participants, the Contest Organizing Committee set up separate judges for the Chinese and English divisions to score and determine the finalists to attend the live (offline and online) presentation at the Education Forum for Asia in Chengdu.
Contest requirements
1. Theme requirements
Participants should choose one of the goals, one principle, one theme, or one dimension in the context of the Asian Education Forum's "Responsible Management and Youth Development Education" Special Session, based on the requirements of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), Principles for Responsible Management Education (PRME), social, ecological, and environmental responsibility. Specific reference can be made to the 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals for 2030 (see Appendix 2) and the six principles of the Principles for Responsible Management Education (PRME) (see Appendix 3). Participants will submit both a "paper" and a "video".
2. Content requirements
(1) The content fits the requirements of the above theme, with a clear awareness of the issues and humanistic values.
(2) Have a clear line of argument, adequate citation (literature, data, etc.) of materials; be fluent, logical, and have a distinct conclusion.
(3) Reflective ability, academic vision, coherence, academic imagination, academic presentation, etc.; be able to reflect the analysis and argumentation of important issues, and provide in-depth explanation and interpretation of the meaning of key texts.
(4) The papers submitted must adhere to academic standards. The Forum will check all submitted papers and if plagiarism or other academic misconduct are found, the author will be suspended from the contest and will be blacklisted from PRME activities.
(5) The video demonstrates clear and fluent language expression, with a clear and loud voice,full of passion, able to use posture, gestures and expressions to express understanding of the speech. Business formal attire with appropriate mannerisms.
3. Word count for paper (excluding references)
(1) Ph.D. and Postgraduate Group: 5400 words;
(2) Undergraduate and College group: 3600 words;
(3) High School and Vocational School Group: 2700 words.
4. Format requirements
The format of the content includes writing, video production, and live academic presentations.
(1) Paper section:
The paper should be written in English or Chinese, depending on the language of participants. The paper should include a title, body, and references (not required for high school students). Sources must be cited using Harvard Reference Style. Papers must be submitted electronically in MS Word format with Times New Roman 12-point font; character spacing: standard; line spacing: 1.5 lines.
(2) Video section:
A brief explanation of the summary of the work, 2-3 minutes long, in MP4 format.
5. Submission requirements
(1) Submission deadline:
Deadline for submission of papers: 2 August 2021 at 24:00. Deadline for submission of videos: 8 August at 24:00
(2) Submission:
According to the time requirements, the paper or video should be submitted with the main folder in the form of a WinRAR archive, named "Participants Group - Language Type - Author's Name " (e.g., "Undergraduate College Group - Chinese - Zhang San"), together with the entry slip (Appendix 1) to prmebtbu@126.com, with the same email title as the main folder, i.e., "Participants Group - Language Type - Author's name". Participants will be notified of the acceptance/non-acceptance of their papers by the Contest Organizing Committee on 1 August.
6. Final presentation requirements
A final 10-minute live presentation using PowerPoint should be given. The presentation itself should be limited to 6 minutes, with 4 minutes remaining for 1-2 questions from the judges. Foreign participants can present online.
Assessment stage
Three judging sessions are set for the preliminary, second and final rounds.
1. Preliminary Round Selection
(1) Call for papers (deadline 24:00 on 8 August)
Participants must submit their paper to the Organizing Committee before the deadline.
(2) Preliminary selection of works (9 August - 12 August)
The Organizing Committee will organize a panel of experts from the Academic Selection Committee and the Social Review Committee to conduct a preliminary selection in the English and Chinese categories respectively.
No more than 10 papers from each category (60 in total) will be selected for the second round.
2. Second Round Selection
(1) Video submission (deadline 24:00 on 8 August)
Second Round Selection will be required to submit a 2–3 minutes video addressing the topic, structure and major points of the submitted paper.
(2) Second Round Selection of Videos (9 August - 10 August)
The Organizing Committee will organize a panel of experts from the Academic Selection Committee and the Social Review Committee to review the videos in the English and Chinese categories. No more than 4 persons from each category (20 in total) will be selected for the final presentation.
Of these, the top 6 contestants in each of the English and Chinese categories will be directly qualified to participate in the final academic presentation and the last four contestants will be the candidates for final academic presentation.
3. Final Stage
(1) Contestants contacting (10 August - 11 August)
The Organizing Committee communicates with the finalists of the Academic Presentation and finalists sign a commitment letter to confirm their participation in the Chengdu PRME Special Session on 17-19 September.
(2) Arrival at the site (17 September)
Participants in the Final Academic Presentation should arrive in Chengdu at the designated time and check into the designated hotel.
(3) Presentation (18 September)
a. The Organizing Committee will arrange for a special bus to take the contestants to the conference venue and determine the order of presentation by drawing lots.
b. The contestants will present in order. Each contestant will be given a total of 10 minutes, of which 6 minutes for the presentation and 4 minutes to answer 1-2 questions from the judges.
c. The Academic Selection Committee and the Social Review Committee of the Chinese and English categories will score the presentations on site and select one First Prize, two Second Prizes and three Third Prizes in the Chinese and English categories respectively.
Scoring Criteria
1. Marking of papers
Scoring rules are set around three dimensions: problem statement, problem analysis and solution, with a focus on "problem statement" for the senior secondary vocational module and "problem analysis" and "solution" for the undergraduate and doctoral module.
2. Video marking
Scoring rules are set around four dimensions: problem statement, problem analysis, solution and presentation style.
The scoring for the vocational group focuses on "problem statement" and "presentation style". The PhD and the undergraduate module focus on “problem analysis”, “solutions” and “presentation style”.
3. Scoring for the final round
Scoring rules are set around five dimensions: problem statement, problem analysis, solution, PowerPoint and presentation style. The marking of the module for the vocational school focuses on “problem statement”, “PowerPoint”, “presentation style”. The undergraduate college module and the Ph.D. and Postgraduate group focus on "problem analysis", "solution", "PPT production" and "presentation style", "Presentation style".
4. Weighting
The Academic Selection Committee will give a weighting of 60% of the total points and the Social Assessment Committee will give a weighting of 40% of the total points.
Final remarks
1. The Organizing Committee will issue electronic certificates to all students who participate in the event.
2. The Organizing Committee will award certificates and prizes to the above mentioned winners and pay for the travel and accommodation expenses of all participating students to Chengdu (Minors must be accompanied by a guardian, who is responsible for their own expenses, and insurance is recommended; please follow local policies regarding epidemic prevention and control requirements).
3. All students who participate in the three sessions understand that their work will be used for academic exchange and agree to have their award-winning papers edited and published by the Organizing Committee at a later date.
4. To enhance the continuity of this event, the winner of the contest will be invited to attend the 8th International Symposium on Responsibility management Education to be held on 20-21 October 2021, hosted by Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University.
