Are You Doing Well in Shenzhen?
If you haven't moved house at least three times you're not a Shenzhen local. Original residents moved from low tile structures to small foreign-style buildings. Those pioneers moved from sheds into makeshift shelters, and then into newer structures. Young innovators later moved from cramped rented flats to spacious communities, and high-rise buildings. The people of the villages have seen countless changes in their lives, both happy and sad. So are you doing well in Shenzhen? This is something you'll feel naturally.

Long Zongzi
As zongzi, or glutinous rice creation wrapped in bamboo leaves, made here is quite big and long, it is called "pillow zongzi". Hakka people have strong tastes, and like the savoury taste of these snacks. They're made with rice and green bean paste, stuffed with pork, and then boiled for about 10 hours. The rice is dyed green, and the pork fat leaks into the rice and beans, with the meat inside melting in the mouth. If cut into slices and fried, it's crisp and crunchy.

Uncle McDonald Is Coming
The first McDonald's in the mainland of China opened in Dongmen on October 8, 1990. Ronald McDonald sited upon the Guanghua Building on Jiefang Road, smiling as he looked over the sea of people. The queue lined up from ground to first floor, and then all the way around, and then circled around the Guanghua Building. The first round of workers for the restaurant numbered 400 people, and was still stretched thin; 500 temporary workers had to be sourced from Hong Kong. Today McDonalds is all over China, where it has changed its official name to "Golden Arch".

Underground Workers
The Shenzhen underground system goes all over, and requires constant maintenance, a hard job. Underneath the city, there are these workers who run around deep underground, working until 4 in the morning, sometimes climbing into shafts 5 metres deep. Day after day, they maintain the order of the system, unseen by most. We should respect these hard workers!

Farmed Shrimp
Farming fish in walled plots is common in China; those that partake in this activity are "plot lords". They have come down from the sea, constructing plots via a series of dykes near the sea in which they farm crabs and shrimp. These "farmed shrimp" are quite good, especially those from the Xixiang Town; in the city of Shenzhen they are popular, with their thin shells, tender meat, and nourishing properties. Tasty, and healthy.

Orchids at Home
Liu Qinxian, originally from Zhejiang, is 80 years old, and has lived in Shenzhen for 15 years already. She goes to the park every day to walk, and like to look at the bougainvillea and peach flowers on Lianhua Hill, but what she loves the most are the orchids of her hometown. Her brother over 70 years old comes from Yunhe County, bringing an orchid. When it blooms, Ms. Liu smells the fragrance of her home. Her son records her sentiments: the smell of the orchid floats through the summer air, and feelings for my hometown bloom in my heart.

The Prefix of "A"
Whether young or old, people in Shenzhen like to add "a" to the start of names. This is a prefix that came about after the Wei and Jin Dynasties, which adds an element of sincerity or familiarity to a name. Names for family relations can contain this like, "A Bo" (father's elder brother) and "A Shu" (father's younger brother), "A Gong" (grandfather), and "A Po" (grandmother) are all very intimate. Younger people can be thus called by prefixing "a" to their surname, such as "A Zhang", "A Li", and the prefix can also be used with given names, such as "A Yuan" and "A Xiang". Even northerners who come to Shenzhen get used to being thus called.

Lard Cakes
Shenzhen doesn't just have seafood, it also has the lard cake. Maybe as it's produced in the SEZ, the lard cakes in Shenzhen are especially big and thick, golden in colour and shining like amber. The glassine under the wax paper is especially thin, and as you bite into it, it almost dances as it melts on your tongue, fragrant and not cloying. If you want to experience this flavour, you'll have to put in a bit of work and search around the old streets.

One Bowl of Soup
It's OK to have no side dishes, but not OK to have no soup. Cantonese people love soup, and it's essential to have a bowl before the meal, opposite to the course of things in the north. Traditional Cantonese women are experts at making soup, able to put a combination of normal ingredients into a pot and produce a delicious creation. When mothers call their children in other cities, they may open the conversation by asking them if they've had soup yet that day.

Ten Views of Shenzhen
The roots and soul of a city are in its views and spirit. In 2010, Shenzhen started a voting activity for the "Ten Most Influential Views of Shenzhen". "Time is money, and efficiency is life", "talk doesn't built a nation; get things done", "let's get to it", "let's give respect to our city's book lovers", "ah, this is Shenzhen life" and others were selected. These are the views that took Shenzhen from a small fishing village to a huge city.
