Positional Outsiders and the Ethics of Narrative:

The Case of Franz Kafka

After the First World War, the first modern laboratory for testing the state of exception, the latter becomes the dominant paradigm of government in Europe, reducing the distinct identities of many people to bare life. Without having done anything wrong, they are calmly eliminated from their states’ citizen rights. The political reconfiguration after the breakup of empires bereaves them of their human status, forcing them into a subhuman existence. I will depart from the thesis that these “positional outsiders” become the sources of some post-imperial writers’ ethical commitment. From their perspective, literature ought to be derived from the “zones of indistinction” (Agamben) as the containers of that which the historical world has pushed into oblivion. These zones summon writers to redeem their inhabitants. Hugo von Hofmannsthal saw as his sacrificial task to take the position of an entirely deprived being exposed to denigration by placing himself at the service of the “suffering of the thousands”. Kafka frequently addressed his authorial commitment to such an utterly dispossessed position, exempted from the living world into the realm of the dead. However, at the same time, he was aware of the insidious character of this operation, which enjoys the comfort of detachment withhold to the figures who are forced to die as well as the readers who really suffer because of that. By exposing such weaknesses of ‘inferior beings’, the author calculatingly outmaneuvers Last Judgment as the criterion of their behavior. “I am not really striving to be good”, writes Kafka, “but very much the contrary”, to become “the only sinner who won’t be roasted”. I will explore the consequences of this political contamination of his narrative ethics.
