The cultural landscape of the Honghe Hani Rice Terraces are a marvel of farming ingenuity and advancement and were created by people of various ethnic groups, mainly the Hani. They took advantage of the special geographical and climactic conditions of the region, and have been recorded as having a history of over 1,300 years.

As would be expected, classic works continue to be presented and the 2022 edition features 170 works including some particularly famous pieces. Taken by intrepid photographers who have risked plenty for the advancement of their art form, many photographs have been taken in environments of extreme heat or cold, in remote and spectacular locations key to humanity and history. National Geographic’s lenses unfailingly reach into hearts and minds, emerging as they do from the minds of passionate explorers and meticulous observers. The emotional temperature of each photograph is carefully conveyed through the lens, with charged expressions and powerful perspectives.

This McCarey photograph of a young Afghan girl is one of National Geographic’s most instantly recognizable classics, with a storyteller’s eye and a ragged dress that perfectly encapsulates the young girl’s predicament in all its turmoil. Despite the image becoming famous across the globe, her identity was a mystery until as late as 2002 when the name Shabat Gullah became known.
