青年艺术家杜秋锐——艺术创作应该忠于自己

Recently Shanghai Spotlight sat down with Qiurui Du to discuss his emergence as an exciting young artist with a distinctive style and a message which echos many of the fascinations and concerns of China’s youth today. We wanted to get a clearer idea of his development as an artist and what motivates him to create and test himself every day. He discussed with us the significant influence studying abroad in the USA had on the development of his style and artistic vision, enabling him to view his Chinese identity from a new perspective. 


最近,聚焦上海团队对青年艺术家杜秋锐进行了采访。青年艺术家杜秋锐与我们探讨了他在国外学习的经历对他的艺术生涯以及个人发展所带来的影响,也是这份经历,使得他能从一个全新视角去看待他所属的中国文化背景。

Regardless of his location, Du talks about how learning to identify and encapsulate his personal vision was an important lesson he learned at art school. ‘’I learnt that no matter that you’re studying in New York or wherever, you don’t have to produce works to please your local audience… You have to create something with which you feel a connection’’, he tells us.


青年艺术家杜秋锐谈到他在艺术学校学习到的深刻一课——无论身处何地,学会如何识别以及概括来自于个人视角的内涵及深意至关重要。他告诉我们:“无论你在纽约,或是其他任何地方,你不必为了取悦观众而去进行作品创作......你总要去创造一些有所感触的作品,与你同频共振的艺术。”

Representing all walks of society is clearly something that matters greatly to Du, and this subject comes up repeatedly in our conversation. Part of this perhaps comes from his empathy as feeling like an outsider himself at times. ‘’I believe my background helps me think outside the box… I can look at Chinese society from a different perspective. In New York as a young foreign student I was obviously an outsider, but every time I went back to Beijing during my vacation and saw how quickly things were changing there… I felt an outsider there too. So an outsider in both places!’’


能够以艺术之名来代表社会各阶层对青年艺术家杜秋锐而言是一件非常重要的事情,我们也在谈话中反复谈论过多次。其中的原因或许离不开他总能对“局外人“的所思所想感同身受。“我相信我的经历可以帮助我跳出条条框框......这更有利于我从多样的不同的视角来看待中国社会。”青年艺术家杜秋锐说,“在纽约,作为一个年轻的外国学生,我显然是一个‘局外人’;但每次我在休假期间回到北京时,我发觉那里的事物日新月异,这样的瞬息万变也会给我一种‘局外人’之感。可以说,在这两地,我都是‘局外人’。”


《对甜品的渴望》


What is it that Du believes attracts a younger generation to his work? ‘’I think you have to try to be unique, to create and sustain your own visual languages, to have your own concepts which you develop over time.’’ While all this is necessary Du also states that, as an artist, you must never lose enjoyment and fulfillment in your creative process. ‘’You have to be honest to your work, and if you’re honest and really enjoy what you do, I believe people will recognize and react to that.’’


当谈及如何用艺术作品吸引年轻一代的目光时,青年艺术家杜秋锐表示:“我认为你必须是独一无二的,创造并保持专属于你自己的视觉语言,拥有你自己的理念及想法,并做到与时俱进。”除此之外,青年艺术家杜秋锐还认为作为一个艺术家,绝不能在创作过程中失去乐趣和成就感。“你必须对你的工作饱含真诚之心,当你用诚挚与热爱进行创作时,我相信人们一定能感受到你注入作品之中的内涵与想法,并为之动容。”


《公之于众》


When it comes to the themes which frequently appear in his work, Du states his hope that he is in some way able to represent the hopes, attitudes and experiences of the Chinese youth today. He isn’t afraid to confront issues that would traditionally have been considered taboo in both Chinese art and society at large, though his method of approaching these is by necessity covert and tangential. A brief review of his current exhibition demonstrated how his visually arresting images are capable of intelligently commenting on a wide range of societal issues while remaining within acceptable parameters for the general public. Du emphasizes that satire and dark humor play a fundamental role in conveying his intended message to his audience.


当谈及最常进行艺术创作的主题时,青年艺术家杜秋锐坦言他希望他能以某种方式代表当今中国青年的所思所想与态度。他并不畏惧面对那些传统上被认为是中国艺术和整个社会的禁忌的问题,尽管他面对以及处理这些问题的方法大多归于隐蔽与周旋。青年艺术家杜秋锐以其最近结束的展览为例,向我们阐述了他如何运用视觉上引人注目的图像来明智且不失分寸地回应这些广泛的社会问题,让观众的可接受范围内表明自己的立场与评判。青年艺术家杜秋锐强调道,讽刺和黑色幽默在向观众传达他的意图及立场方面起到了根本作用。

An confident message surrounding sex positivity is one hot-button topic that Du is obviously passionate about. Sex positive references can be found in a number of his works and he mentions how representations of this are still challenging at times in today’s China. He is certain however that his youthful audience are receptive to his messages of inclusion and acceptance and through thought-provoking symbolism he is able to offer his support to those who struggle with self-identify and acceptance in today’s turbulent society.


性积极无疑是青年艺术家杜秋锐十分热衷于围绕创作的一个艺术主题。在他的许多作品中都可以找到关于性积极的内容。他还提到,在当今中国,这部分内容的谈论与表现仍然具有挑战性,然而,他坚信他较为年轻的受众能够以包容的心态与进步的思想去接收这些信息。他也希望他能通过这些发人深省的象征意义,向那些在当今的不确定社会中深陷对自我认同的怀疑的人群提供支持与帮助。

When we discuss how the occurrence of Covid-19 and the lockdowns Shanghai has experienced have influenced Du’s recent creations, there is a certain nuance in his response. ‘’While none of these artworks presented here would have been created as they are if lockdown hadn’t occurred, it isn’t the fundamental influence. I, like many of us felt trapped at times but essentially they are a product of my reactions to my circumstances at the time. My imagination is always free, it can’t be held hostage in any situation, so while the lockdowns influenced my emotions these paintings are more my reaction to my own circumstances at the time.’’


当我们讨论后疫情时代对他近期的艺术创作产生了怎样的影响时,青年艺术家杜秋锐的回答有些出乎意料。他说:“虽然如果后疫情时代没有来临,很多的艺术作品并不会像现在这样被创作出来,但对我来说,这并不是我进行创作最根本的原因。我和许多人一样,有时感到被困住,但这其实是当下情境与情绪的产物。想象力永远自由,它不会在任何情况下被挟持。所以虽然后疫情时代在一定程度上影响了我的情绪与创作,但这些画作更多的是我对自己所处环境与情绪的真实反映。”

Du mentions how he intends to continually challenge himself artistically in the near future. While his distinctive and stylized paintings have already brought him solo exhibitions and considerable success, he states his intention to move into new areas in the coming year. ‘’Animals and still life are of great interest to me’’ he tells us. ‘’It’s not just about people. It’s about the environment I live in.’’


青年艺术家杜秋锐还提到他打算在不久的将来对自己现有的艺术风格做出挑战与更新。虽然他独具风格的绘画已经为他带来了相当大的成功,但他仍旧打算在未来一年里进行新的领域的探索与尝试。“动物和静物是我非常感兴趣的,” 他告诉我们,“这不仅仅与人有关,更与我生活的环境相关联。”

The status of art in public education, along with how art is taught and encouraged to children, is an issue that is of great significance in our society today. As with many young artists Du didn’t believe it was effectively taught to him at an early age, and his success could almost be seen as occurring in spite of it rather than as a result of it. ‘’There was a heavy focus on technique. In art school as a kid, all the teacher cared about was technique. But as I grew and discovered you can just enjoy the things you draw with your own style, you can do whatever you want in your own artwork because it’s your own imagination and your own world. So then I found it’s really cool and I found a way to enjoy and appreciate the creative process of art in my life’’.  


如何评判艺术在公共教育中的地位,以及如何对幼儿进行艺术教育和兴趣挖掘是当今社会中具有重大意义的问题。和许多年轻的艺术家一样,青年艺术家杜秋锐认为在他很小的时候并没有得到有效的教育,他在艺术领域的成功几乎可以被看作是未受教育驱使的结果。“大家对技术的关注度很高。小时候在艺术学校,老师关心的其实只是技术。但随着我自己的成长,我发觉其实我可以用属于自己的语言与风格去诠释我的画作,我可以肆意随性地进行创作,因为这是专属于我自己的艺术世界,想象力不该受限。后来,我越来越认为这真的很酷,我想我找到了一种在生活中享受并热衷于艺术创作的方法。”


《泳池派对》


Part of the issue has been art’s place and perceived importance in society, something challenging yet perhaps in a state of change in recent years. ‘’At times in Chinese society, art was historically seen as just an accessory, not something we really need. In that cultural background it can be difficult to encourage young students into art as a career.’’ So, to what extent is this situation changing today? ‘’I think it is changing, slowly perhaps but it is changing. People generally seem more interested and educated about art. Going to galleries and museums has become a common weekend pastime across the country. Importantly, you can see more parents talking their children to artistic events and places too. People genuinely seem to care more about the arts, which is positive’’.


艺术在社会中的地位和感知的重要性是一个具有挑战性的课题,而这也在社会的发展中有所变化。青年艺术家杜秋锐坦言:“在中国社会,很多时候艺术仅仅被视为一个配件,而不是我们真正所需的东西。而在这种文化背景下,鼓励年轻学子将把艺术作为一种职业十分困难。”而这种情况在如今有什么变化吗,青年艺术家杜秋锐谈到:“我认为它正在改变,也许很慢,但它已经走上了改变的道路。如今,人们似乎对艺术更感兴趣,更加乐于受其熏陶。去画廊和博物馆几乎已经成为全国各地常见的周末娱乐消遣活动。更重要的是,你可以看到许多家长也在鼓励他们的孩子多去艺术活动和场所。人们对艺术的重视程度越来越高,这是值得开心的。”


《壁花小姐:甜蜜时刻》


Coming back to Du’s place in the modern Chinese art landscape, he has been labeled as a ‘trendy artist’ by some commentators, a nebulous term we wanted to enquire about. Would it be fair to name Du a ‘trendy artist?’ ‘’I don’t think so, no I don’t. Trending suggests something which is popular or relevant right now, but soon may not be. I think my work is always about myself, the first person I should please is myself. ‘Trendy Art’ suggests art which is only created in and for the moment, now, and to please the audience first and foremost. For me, I want to create something that will last forever, so even if the style won’t be trendy at some point in the future, the core concepts and fundamental meaning of my work will always remain.’’


最后我们就青年艺术家杜秋锐在中国现代艺术领域的地位问题展开了讨论。青年艺术家杜秋锐被一些评论家称为“潮流艺术家”,我们对这个评价是否合理客观有些好奇。青年艺术家杜秋锐回应道:“ ‘潮流’意味着当下正在流行的事物,但也许就会走向消弭。我认为我的作品始终是以自我为中心的,我首先应该取悦的是我自己。对我来说,我想我创造的东西能永远留存下去,哪怕这一风格在未来的某个时刻已不再是潮流,但作品的内核和含义永远不会改变。”

Encapsulating the struggles and dilemmas of modern Chinese youth is a particularly strong point of Qiurui Du’s art and Shanghai Spotlight looks forward to observing the development of this talented young artist. Whichever direction he decides to pursue will be worthy of attention and appraisal and we intend to follow the course of his career with great interest!
