Staying ahead of the competition in Shanghai’s competitive hotel scene isn’t easy at the best of times, and the additional complications that Covid-19 has presented offer additional challenges. To have navigated these so successfully speaks to the foresight and commitment of the senior management team which has left The Sukhothai Shanghai ideally placed to move forward in 2023. A long-awaited reopening to the international community and the hotel’s foreign patrons coincides with the hard work which has gone into making the hotel one of the trendiest locations on Shanghai’s social scene in recent years. Shanghai Spotlight was delighted to meet with The Sukhothai Shanghai’s Resident Manager, Tomonari Tai, to discuss the vision of the Sukhothai Shanghai, the secrets behind its undeniable appeal and what events and announcements we can expect from them in the year ahead.

More recently, The Sukhothai Shanghai has collaborated with famed British designer Tom Dixon to present high concept themed rooms to guests. Available in both studio rooms and executive suites until the end of February.

This collaboration features some of the most iconic designs from Tom Dixon and create an entirely memorable and restive experience for guests which can’t be replicated with inferior quality designs.

With the arrival of two experienced chefs joining the team, we sat down with The Sukhothai Shanghai’s internationally renowned Head Chef Duncan Feng to catch up with these exciting developments. With their La Scala fine Italian restaurant picking up a Black Pearl Restaurant Guide award in 2022 and Urban Café being recognized by Voyage as Best Hotel Restaurant, last year witnessed notable successes yet Chef Duncan is clearly keen to build on these achievements. In a highly competitive environment like the Shanghai’s luxury food and beverage scene, distinguishing yourself from your rivals involves constant innovation and dedication to quality. In our conversation we discussed the importance of a consistent vision, the necessity of delivering consistently high quality and the value of authenticity in elevating The Sukhothai Shanghai’s offerings above the crowded Shanghai restaurant scene.

“Many people love the intensity and passion of Thai food, but they often won’t have experienced its subtleties”, Tomonari tells us. “Chef Anchalee is originally from Chiang Mai, which produces one of the four regional cuisines of Thailand. Many customers won’t have experienced this, and this level of authenticity and expertise is definitely attractive to food lovers and connoisseurs in Shanghai’’. Chef Anchalee has already presented a well received Chef’s Table evening focusing on the delicacies of her home region. It’s success has led to demands for evenings based on the other regions, and this kind of added value is exactly what appeals to gourmands looking for more than a yellow curry or spaghetti bolognese to satisfy them.

One of the exciting concepts which creates genuinely unique experiences for guests and patrons is brand collaborations, of which The Sukhothai Shanghai has enjoyed several notable successes in recent months. ‘’At their best, collaborations create a synergy and spark that provides incredible unique experiences for our guests’’, Tomonari informs us. Last September The ZUK Bar hosted Sober Company and celebrity bartender Kazu while Chef Anchalee Luadkham presented a miniature banquet of excellent Thai appetizers for guests to experience.
