Record Breaking Artwork Reveals The Splendor of Tibet
This is a once-in-a-lifetime journey across thousands of miles to meet and understand the Himalayas. 2022 brings the wonderful Tibetan culture to the city of Shanghai, without having to travel across China for the privilege of seeing the legend for yourself!
The 618-metre Guinness World Record-winning The Great Tangka of Tibetan Art and Culture Of China is the result of 27 years of planning by Chinese national art and craft master Dzogchen Raj, who led more than 400 top painters from Qinghai, Tibet, Gansu, Yunnan and Sichuan provinces to work together for four years to paint the 618-metre-long Guinness World Record-winning The Great Tangka of Tibetan Art and Culture Of China, which brings together monks and masters from various sects and presents the unseen ancient monasteries to the world, integrating tradition and modernity, myth and secularism. The exhibition showcases a 50-metre-long exhibition of the Custodian of the Temple. The exhibition will showcase 50 metres of the original scroll.
The painting is 618 metres long and 2.5 metres wide, with the entire scroll covering over 1500 square metres. The entire scroll is painted with more than 700 thangkas, containing more than 183,000 figures, and decorated with more than 3,000 kinds of pile embroidery patterns on the top and bottom sides. It is made entirely of gold, silver, pearls, onyx, coral, pine ear stones and other precious mineral gems, as well as saffron, rhubarb and other precious plants, making it a breathtakingly beautiful and opulent picture.
This masterpiece systematically links together the historical origins of the Tibetan people, their religious heritage, culture and art, medicine and health, astronomy and geography, myths and legends, living customs, national unity and regional prosperity. It is not only a concentrated expression of traditional Tibetan painting techniques, but also a crystallisation of the wisdom of the people of all ethnic groups.
In Tibetan, the word "sand painting" means "mandala of coloured powder". A world of splendour is but a handful of sand. This exquisite religious art has been passed down from generation to generation without interruption since the Buddha himself taught his disciples how to make sand altars over 2,500 years ago. There are many different ways to make an altar city, and its composition is so orderly, so square and round, so geometrically precise, that it is a miniature of the world. The colours are brilliant and dazzling, with a special artistic charm.
For 50 days from the start of the exhibition, the Guinness World Record Painted Grand View painter painted the sand painting on site for six hours a day, sitting with his face covered throughout the exhibition, blocking out his breath as he slowly painted a sand painting masterpiece from the centre to the surroundings.
After the long drawing, the altar city is instantly destroyed. The world is impermanent, there is no need to cling to anything, everything is empty. The process of making a sand painting of an altar city is like the process of pursuing a life. The moment when one has exhausted oneself to achieve one's goal is the moment when the altar city is completed. However, the beautiful sand paintings do not remain frozen in time, they change. On the last day of the exhibition, 5 February, a ceremony will be held in the exhibition hall to mark the return of the sand painting to its original state, echoing the essence of impermanence, illusion, non-attachment and emptiness.
Gesar was a hero of his time, and countless folk singers added to his legacy. The epic was at its peak and continues to be sung today as the world's only living epic.
The Museum exhibits a large number of King Gesar's precious artefacts and creates a 17-metre-long tunnel through hell, revealing a thrilling and mysterious past of destruction and rise.
In the struggle for supremacy, there are no winners. This centuries-old struggle for power, religion, choice and compromise will be re-enacted at the Museum, where the shock and sorrow will remain.
Thangka is a unique form of painting in Tibetan culture, which expresses complex and profound Buddhist philosophies and artistic connotations through the simple language of graphics. The museum has invited thangka painters to the museum to paint thangkas on site, so that you can see the process of thangka artists up close and actually feel the inner peace and shock.
The colours of many thangkas are taken from ores that are millions or even hundreds of millions of years old, and are pounded, sieved, panned, boiled, dry-ground, wet-ground and precipitated to obtain a small amount of precious pigments, which is the 'black technology' that makes the thangkas so bright and colourful, even after a hundred years.
Gang Rinpoche, the Tibetan word for king of mountains, stretches across the south-western Tibet Autonomous Region of China, parallel to the Himalayas. Legend has it that Gandhi and Namunani fell in love and were married, but by chance they both turned into mountains. Listen to an untold story of mountain love on a sacred mountain.
Located in Tibet, Ali's Mount Gangdis is like a lotus flower in bloom, crossing race and religion, culture and national boundaries, becoming the Buddhist world's Mount Sumeru. For thousands of years, Tibetans have surrounded this sacred mountain, seeing it as the centre of the universe, the birthplace of religion and the heart of culture.
The museum re-writes a love story from the depths of Mount Gandhi in the form of a fading animation, recreating the romance and twists between the mountains and the water, and showing visitors the cultural origins of the Himalayas.
