报告摘要


The complexity of combustion chemistry usually makes it impractical to determine all the important rate and thermochemical parameters by experimentation. Therefore, one must instead work in the opposite direction, predicting the chemistry, and only using experiments to check or refine the predictions. Here we will explain and discuss modern methods for making these predictions, by combining quantum chemistry calculations with estimation methods. As an illustrative case, we will show how we have used these predictions to try to understand the formation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) in pyrolysis and fuel-rich combustion. The work highlights both our ability to predict the chemistry even before any experiments have been done, and some of the challenges in making accurate predictions.


主讲人介绍



Prof. William H. Green is a world leader in chemical reaction engineering, and he has led many research projects related to fuels, combustion, and pyrolysis. He is particularly well known for his development of computer methods for simulating and predicting the behavior of complicated reacting mixtures. He earned his B.A. summa cum laude from Swarthmore College in 1983, and his Ph.D. in Physical Chemistry from UC Berkeley in 1988. After postdocs at Cambridge University and the Univ. of Pennsylvania, he worked at Exxon Research & Engineering for 6 years before joining the Chemical Engineering faculty at MIT in 1997. He has written or co-authored more than 290 journal articles or book chapters, and his papers have been cited more than 12,500 times. He is a Fellow of the AAAS and a Fellow of the Combustion Institute, and he has received the ACS Glenn Award in Fuel Chemistry and AIChE’s R.H. Wilhelm Award in Reaction Engineering. Two of his inventions for reducing greenhouse gas emissions are now being commercialized. He is the co-Director of MIT’s Mobility Systems Center. He previously served as the Editor of the International Journal of Chemical Kinetics, as the faculty chair of MIT’s Mobility of the Future project, and as the Executive Officer of the MIT Department of Chemical Engineering.
