Quantum lattice models with time evolution governed by local unitary quantum circuits can serve as a minimal model for the study of general unitary dynamics under local interactions. Although such circuit dynamics exhibit many of the features expected of generic many-body dynamics, exact results generally require the presence of randomness in the circuit. We will discuss dual-unitary circuits, a special class of maximally entangling gates characterized by an underlying space-time symmetry, and show how they give rise to exactly solvable models for ergodic and non-ergodic thermalization and prethermalization for correlations and the scrambling of out-of-time-order correlators.

Pieter Claeys is currently a Research Associate in the Theory of Condensed Matter group at the University of Cambridge. His main research interests are strongly correlated quantum systems, especially out of equilibrium, with recent research focusing on Floquet dynamics, counterdiabatic driving, and unitary circuit dynamics. Before joining the Cambridge group, he obtained his Ph.D. at Ghent University and the University of Amsterdam and then spent a year at Boston University as a Postdoctoral Researcher.
