From Thouless pumping to phonon magnetic moment

报告摘要
When a potential changes slowly and returns to its starting point at time T, Thouless pointed out that a quantized charge can be pumped carried by an adiabatic current [Thouless, PRB 27, 6083 (1983)]. By considering such an adiabatic current as the current induced by polarization change, a microscopic theory of polarization was developed. The quantization of the pumped charge is also closely related to the topological indices that characterize topological phases. In a two-dimension (2D) system, the adiabatic current can also be related to orbital magnetization, whose curl in real space gives rise to a current. By considering the pumping in a 2D system induced by the periodic rotation of ions, we studied the orbital magnetization induced by the ion’s vibration, which can be interpreted as phonon magnetic moment [PRL 127, 186403 (2021)].
报告人简介
Yafei Ren, Ph.D., is a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Washington. He earned both his B.S. and Ph.D. degrees from the University of Science and Technology of China and worked as a postdoc at the University of Texas at Austin. His research focuses on the topological phases induced by spin-orbit coupling and interaction, including Chern insulator, higher-order topological insulator, and three-dimensional quantum Hall effect. He has recently turned his attention to the geometrical phase effect on the low-frequency elementary excitations, such as phonons. He has about 30 publications on PRL, PRB, Rep. Prog. Phys., Nature, Nat. Nano. etc.
