About Prof. Jiaxing Huang

Jiaxing Huang received his B.S. degree in Chemical Physics from University of Science and Technology of China (USTC) , Ph.D. in Chemistry from University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), and became a Miller Fellow at University of California, Berkeley in 2004. From 2007 to 2021, he was an assistant, associate and then full professor of materials science and engineering at Northwestern University (Evanston, IL USA). He joined Westlake University in August 2021 to become a chair professor of materials in the School of Engineering. He is the founding Editor-in-Chief of Accounts of Materials Research.
Prof. Huang’s group enjoys integrating education and research to enhance learning experience for their trainees and themselves. They apply chemical principles and tools to discover new materials, advance materials processing, and manufacturing, and use material innovations for better living. Current interests include carbon nanomaterials, bulk nanostructured materials from well-defined units, and materials concepts for personal care and public health.

Force-triggered Growth of Double Network Hydrogels Based on Bond Cleavage-induced Polymerization

Jian Ping Gong is a distinguished professor of Hokkaido University, Japan. She graduated from Zhejiang University, China, and received Doctor of Engineering at Tokyo Institute of Technology. She joined the faculty at Hokkaido University in 1993. She has been focusing on novel functions of hydrogels, including tough double network hydrogels, self-healing hydrogels, hydrogel friction and adhesion, hydrogel composites. Recently, she is focusing on functional hydrogels inspired by biological systems, including self-growing hydrogels, thermal stiffening hydrogels, marine adhesive hydrogels, and memorizing-forgetting hydrogels. She is also working on the applications of the double network hydrogels as cartilages. She received several awards including Wiley Polymer Science Award (2001), The Award of the Society of Polymer Science, Japan (2006), The Chemical Society of Japan Award (2011), The DSM Materials Sciences Award (2014), the MEXT Commendation for Science and Technology, Japan (2019), the Chemical Society of Japan (CSJ) Award (2021).

Materials Space-Tectonics: A Conceptual Paradigm for Creating Second-Generation Porous Materials

Professor Yusuke Yamauchi received his Bachelor's degree (2003), Master's degree (2004), and Ph.D. degree (2007) from the Waseda University, Japan. After receiving his Ph.D., he joined the National Institute of Materials Science (NIMS), Japan, to start his own research group. At the same time, he started to serve as an adjunct professor to supervise Ph.D. students at the Department of Nanoscience and Nanoengineering, Waseda University. After being granted the ARC Future Fellowship, in May 2016, he joined the Institute for Superconducting & Electronic Materials (ISEM), the Australian Institute for Innovative Materials (AIIM), the University of Wollongong (UOW) as a Professor. In 2018, he moved to the University of Queensland (UQ). Presently, he is a Senior Group Leader at the Australian Institute for Bioengineering and Nanotechnology (AIBN) (on secondment from the School of Chemical Engineering until 2026), a Professor at the School of Chemical Engineering, and a Director at the Australian Materials nanoTectonic Centre. He concurrently serves as an ERATO Research Director at the JST-ERATO Yamauchi Materials Space-Tectonics, a Group Leader at the Mesoscale Materials Chemistry Group, the International Center for Materials Nanoarchitectonics (WPI-MANA), the National Institute for Materials Science (NIMS), a Visiting Professor at the Waseda University, an Advisory Board Member of prestigious journals (Small, Small Structures, ChemCatChem, J. Inorg. Organomet. Polym. Mater., etc.), and an Associate Editor of the Journal of Materials Chemistry A published by the Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC) and Chemical Engineering Journal (Elsevier).
He is selected as one of the Highly-Cited Researchers in Chemistry in 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020 and 2021 and in Materials Science in 2020 and 2021. Recently, he was selected as one of Australia's Top 40 Researchers of Research Report published by The Australian in 2019, 2020 and 2021.

Jihyeon Yeom is an Assistant Professor at the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST). The Yeom lab is focusing on developing new chiral nanomaterials for next-generation bioanalysis and spectroscopic analysis creating Bio Big Data. During her career, she has been recognized with numerous awards including Charles G. Overberger Research Award (2016), Richard F. and Eleanor A. Towner Prize (2015), and Frank E. Filisko Research Award (2013). She also has been selected as a TJ Foundation POSCO Science Fellow in 2020 with her research on blood-based disease early diagnosis using novel chiral nano platforms.

Pooi See Lee received her Ph.D. degree from National University of Singapore in 2002. She is a recipient of the 2001 Norman Hackerman Young Author award presented by the Electrochemical Society, USA. She joined the Nanyang Technological University as an Assistant Professor in 2002. She received tenured Associate Professorship in 2009 and promoted to Full Professor in 2015. She is named the President’s Chair Professor in Materials Science and Engineering 2021.
Pooi See has authored and co-authored many publications in the field of nanomaterials for energy and electronics applications. She holds more than 30 patents filed/provisional applications at present. Pooi See is a recipient of the prestigious NRF Investigatorship 2015. She received the Nanyang Research Award in 2016 and Nanyang Innovation Award in 2018. From 2016 to 2019, she served as the Associate Dean in College of Engineering. She is appointed as the Dean of Graduate College in 2020, and concurrently served as Associate Provost (Graduate Education) from Mar 2022.
Pooi See is a member of Materials Research Society. She serves as the editorial board member of Advanced Energy Materials, Account of Materials Research, Advanced Intelligent Systems, Batteries & Supercaps, NPG Asia Materials, PLOS One, Scientific Reports and Frontier. She is the Senior Editor of ACS Energy Letters. She is interested in synthesizing innovative nanomaterials, and harnessing its multi-functionality through understanding the structural-property characteristics. She has developed high energy capacitors, energy saving electrochromic coatings, novel transparent conductors, flexible and stretchable devices. She is keen in advancing the frontier of green nanotechnology and to translate research outcomes into real solutions. She is elected as the National Academy of Inventors (NAI) Fellow in 2020, the highest professional distinction accorded solely to academic inventors.

Composite Materials with Bioinspired Microstructures: Towards Engineering Applications

Hortense Le Ferrand is an Assistant Professor at the School of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering of the Nanyang Technological University in Singapore since 2019. She earned her Master and PhD degrees in Materials science from ETH Zurich in Switzerland and a Dipl. Ing. in physical chemistry from ESPCI Paris, France. Her research focusses on developing processing methods for advanced structural materials, including composites and ceramics, and stems from bioinspiration. Dr. Le Ferrand has been the recipient of several awards, including the Postdoctoral publication prize from the Materials Research Society, the Materials and Processes prize from ETH Zurich, and in 2020 the prestigious National Research Foundation Fellowship from Singapore.

Jong-Beom Baek is a professor/director at the School of Energy and Chemical Engineering/Center for Dimension-Controllable Organic Frameworks, Ulsan National Institute of Science and Technology (UNIST), South Korea. After awarding his Ph.D. degree from Polymer Science, University of Akron (USA, 1998), he joined the Wright-Patterson Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL). Then, he returned to his home country to take up a position as an assistant professor at Chungbuk National University in 2003, before moving to UNIST in 2008. His current research interests include the syntheses of two- and three-dimensional high-performance organic network structures and the chemical modifications of carbon-based materials for multifunctional applications, including energy conversion and storage. He has authored and co-authored over 250 peer-reviewed publications in the areas. He has also registered and filed over 70 international and domestic patents. Some of them have been transferred to an industry and started his own companies for commercialization.
