在把自己锁在房子外面后，我只是觉得在我男朋友下午下班回来之前，我还有一个稍微长一点的遛狗时间。因为我和小曼图被锁在外面，我去不了通常白天去的公园。相反，不得不绕着公园的外围走，这让我选择了一条不同的回家的路。这条新小路把我引向了黄兴路上的一只受伤的狗。
After locking myself out of the house I just figured I would have a slightly longer dog-walking session until my boyfriend got back from work in the afternoon. And since I was locked outside with little Mantou, I wouldn’t be able to enter the park that I usually visit during the day. Instead, I would have to walk around the perimeter of the park, which caused me to take a different way back home. This new path led me to an injured dog on Huangxing road.

The dog made a few unsuccessful attempts to get up. I stood there for a while trying to figure out what to do. There was no way I would be able to get a taxi with a bloody dog. I checked nearby hospitals and found there was one just 700 meters away. First, I had to make sure she was a friendly dog, or at least friendly enough for me to pick her up. I bent down and inspected her wound. The wound was so deep you could see her bone sticking through.

I stroked her on the head a few times and she looked at me with a glazed overexpression. I then attempted to reach under her. She didn’t flinch, so I gently picked her up. She was extremely light, and it was evident she hadn’t eaten well in quite a while. On top of that, she appeared to be pregnant or had recently given birth. I nuzzled her face softly to try to reassure her that she would be okay, holding back tears. As I walked toward the hospital, Mantou trotted alongside us, looking up at the dog with a curious expression.

我双手颤抖着在前台填写表格，等医生过来看她。
With shaky hands, I filled out forms at the front desk and waited for the doctor to come over and have a look at her.
他们给她做了全面检查，包括验血和x光；还清洗了她的伤口，并试图喂她吃东西，但她拒绝了。
They did a full examination including blood tests and X-rays; they cleaned her wound and tried to feed her. She refused to eat.

The doctor explained the situation to me and asked me for her name. “No name right now,” I replied. Her leg was in bad shape and it seemed the only solution would be amputation. The leg was too damaged to save and infection could spread up her leg into other parts of her body. He also mentioned the slight possibility of saving her leg, but the chance was slim. I felt as if there was really no other option at that point, so I accepted to have her go into surgery, which they said would be scheduled within the next 2 days. I just hoped she wouldn’t feel too sad with only three legs, and I knew the chance of her being adopted would reduce a lot, but she seemed like such a sweet dog I knew there was hope for her. I reluctantly said goodbye to her as they whisked her off to a cage for more treatment.

第二天我去看她的时候，她看起来好了很多，当我打开笼门时，她甚至摇起了尾巴。
The next day I came in to check on her, she looked a little better. She even wagged her tail when I opened the cage door.

Perhaps, she was hopeful of getting to leave and go back outside. I was happy to see her, but nervous about the surgery and her reaction to it. “There is someone who wants to meet you from the compound that dog usually stays in. They are willing to take on all of the costs of the surgery, and all fees afterward. Are you able to wait? The person can come in about half an hour.” The doctor said. I was a little surprised, assuming there was a whole community of people interested in paying for the fees for the dog and perhaps adopting her. To my surprise, the person who walked in was a young college student who looked very concerned about the dog.
“她是在我们院子里的，我们都很喜欢它，平时也照顾着它。她很可爱，很听话，如果你能找到人照顾她，我将支付所有的费用。” 我很惊讶他想承担所有的费用，但还是同意了，但不可能让他承担日益增长的医疗费用，当时的费用超过了一万三。“如果可以的话，我想分期付款，我没办法一次付那么多钱。” 我告诉他我们会想办法的。接着他告诉我，他知道她的小狗在哪里，一共5只。他带着含泪的表情问，在我们把她带回家之前，她能不能最后一次看她的孩子。我回答道我们也会一起收养她的宝宝，因为它们如果能在一起的话是最好不过的。我不确定我的男朋友对这个消息会有什么反应，但是我忍受不了她刚生完孩子就离开她的孩子。我还问他是否知道那只狗出了什么事，他证实是一辆车撞了她。
“She is from my compound. We all love her very much and take care of her. She is a sweet, well-behaved dog. I will pay for all of the costs if you can just find someone to take care of her.” I was so taken aback by him wanting to take on all of the fees. I agreed, but knew there was no way I was going to let him take on the growing medical bills, which at the time were over 13,000 RMB. “I can pay in installments if that’s okay? I can’t really pay so much at one time.” I told him we would figure it all out later. He then informed me he knew where her puppies were and that she had 5 of them. With a tearful expression, he asked if before we brought her home if she could come back to see her babies one last time. I responded by telling him that of course we would take the puppies in as well, as it was better for them to all be together. I wasn’t exactly sure how my boyfriend would react to this news, but I couldn’t bear the thought of her being away from her pups after just giving birth to them. I also asked him if he knew what happened to the dog, and he confirmed that a vehicle had hit her.

Surgery Day
手术日是在一个下雨的周二下午。在手术前，我把几个检查的钱付了，医生告诉了我手术的全部细节和并发症。我签了字以后，医生不止两次问我是否真的没有其他问题了。我跟他说除了手术和麻醉的风险之外，我真的没有什么可以问的了。在这种情况下，似乎也没有其他的选择了。除了截肢，她的髋关节也有骨折，必须重新对齐。医生告诉我，这两个问题都会得到解决，但她有严重的贫血，很可能是因为她是流浪狗，平常没什么吃的东西。但是她还是可以进行手术的，我再次和她道别，打算手术后再回来。
Surgery day came on a rainy Tuesday afternoon. Right before the surgery I took care of a few more bills for the examination and was given the full details about the surgery and its complications. I signed the waiver and the doctor asked me more than twice if I really had no other questions. I let him know that outside of the risks regarding the procedure and anesthesia there was really nothing else I could ask. It seemed there was no other option in this case anyway. And in addition to the leg amputation, she had a fracture in her hip joint, which had to be put back in alignment. The doctor let me know both issues would be fixed, but that she had severe anemia, more than likely from being a street dog and having limited access to food. However, she was still qualified to undergo the surgery. I said goodbye to her once more, planning to return after the surgery.
那天晚上晚些时候，我们来看她，因为还处于麻醉的疼痛和昏昏沉沉的状态中，她看起来一点也不开心。
Later that night we came to see her. She didn’t look very happy at all as she was probably still in pain and groggy from the anesthesia.

She turned her head away and curled up with her head down. One of the vet technicians informed me that she had been extremely sweet through the whole ordeal. She said that even after the surgery when she was in a lot of pain and everyone was petting her to console her, she stayed just as sweet without acting the least bit aggressive. I really do think rescued dogs are the most grateful. I just hoped she would be feeling better later on.

我继续每天去看她，那个大学生和小区里的其他朋友也一样。虽然过去没几天，但对她来说，一定感觉像是被永远关在笼子里。我给她买了一个毛绒玩具玩，也许可以安慰她一下。她开始正常的吃和喝，甚至偶尔会偷看我一眼。我很难过地得知康复可能需要两周的时间，因为我再也不想看她被关在笼子里了，但我知道最好在医生的护理下她能完全康复。
I continued to visit her everyday, as did the college student and other friends from her compound. Though many days hadn’t passed for her it must have seemed like forever in a cage. I got her a plush toy to play with, albeit in vain. Maybe she could cuddle with it for comfort anyway. She started eating and drinking normally, even moving her head to take a peek at me occasionally. I was sad to learn recovery might take up to two weeks, as I couldn’t bear another day of looking at her in a cage, but it was best that she healed as completely as possible under the doctor’s care.

Her Name is Niu Niu
有天我去医院的时候，医生递给我一张一个小姑娘写的感谢信。
One day, upon visiting, the doctor handed me a thank you note from a young girl.
“她是谁？”我问。医生说不知道，但她是来看狗的，还给她带了一些吃的。读着读着，我又哭了，医生递给我一张纸巾，他现在一定习惯了。在纸条上，女孩说她13岁了，她非常爱这只狗，会想念有她在身边的日子，是她让我知道了狗狗的名字叫妞妞。
“Who?” I asked. He said he didn’t know, but she had come to visit the dog and bring her some food. I teared up yet again, while reading it. The doctor handed me another tissue. He must be used to this by now. In the note the girl said she was 13 years old and that she loves the dog very much and she will miss having her around. She let me know that her name is Niu Niu.
医生随后告诉我他会用更多的食物和药物来帮助她治疗贫血。他问我是要不要喂她，我说好，又觉得她可能对吃东西不感兴趣，因为她看起来很伤心。虽然在给她食物时，她高兴地舔着碗，也喝光了我给她的大部分水。“看来她认识你了。”医生说。
The doctor then let me know he was going to give her some more cans of food and medicine to help with her anemia. He asked me if I would like to feed her. I said yes thinking there might be a possibility she might not be interested in eating, especially because she looked so sad. Though upon giving her food, she happily licked the bowl as well as lapped up most of the water I gave her as well. “It seems she has developed some feelings for you.” The doctor said.

那天晚上，我们和那位大学生一起去看望妞妞，然后打算去接她的小狗。不幸的是，我们被告知，由于妞妞的身体状况，在她康复出院之前，去看她的小狗不是一个好主意，因为她可能会太兴奋了，这可能会妨碍康复。
That night we met up with the college student to check up with Niu Niu and to go pick up her puppies. Unfortunately, we were told because of Niuniu’s state it would not be a good idea for her to see her puppies until she was well enough to leave the hospital since she might get too excited seeing them, which may interfere with her recovery.
我们自己去了附近的院子看了看小狗，他们五个在一个大纸板箱里瑟瑟发抖，为了取暖，纸板箱塞满了衣服和毯子。
We made our way down to the nearby compound and took a look at the puppies. There were five of them rustling around in a large cardboard box, which had been insulated with warm clothes and blankets.
附近的邻居们都聚集在我们周围谈论他们多喜欢妞妞，有一对照顾小狗的年长夫妇告诉我们妞妞是怎么跟他们回家要东西吃，但又不会试图进入他们的房子的事。她受伤的那天，他们觉得很奇怪为什么她不在附近了，他们也不知道她是被车撞了。写那封信的女孩也在那里，我和她说了几句话，谢谢她给我写了这封信。
Nearby neighbors all gathered around to talk to us about Niu Niu and how much they loved her, as well as to send the puppies off. The older couple that was taking care of the puppies told us stories about how Niu Niu used to follow them home for food, but would never try to go inside their house. The day she got injured, they found it weird she wasn’t around that day, and had no idea she had been struck by a car. The girl who wrote the letter was there, and I got to exchange a few words with her and thank her for the note.

大家都很感谢妞妞还活着，同时也感谢我救了她。我们告诉他们随时欢迎来看她，因为我们就住在附近。接着我们把四只小狗带回了家，因为那对夫妇想养其中一只狗。
Everyone was grateful for Niu Niu to still be alive and thanked me for saving her. We let them know that they were welcome to our place anytime to see her since we were just around the corner. We then took four of the puppies since the couple wanted to keep one of the dogs, and headed back home.
妞妞和她的宝宝们的旅程还没有结束，她的一条后腿还在恢复中，不过她意志坚强，谁过来抱她，她都会迎上去。她绝对是我见过的最可爱、最坚强的狗狗之一。
The journey hasn’t ended for Niu Niu and her puppies. Niu Niu is still recovering the use of her one back leg, though she has a strong spirit and will go up to anyone who beckons her over for a cuddle. She is definitely one of the sweetest most resilient dogs I have ever met.

The puppies, being too young for vaccinations, all contracted Parvo.
非常不幸，由于他们的妈妈被车撞了，它们在很小的时候(大约2周)就被切断了与母亲的乳汁，这使得它们更容易生病。
This is unfortunately because since a car hit their mother, they were cut off from her milk at too early an age (around 2 weeks), causing them to be more susceptible to illness.
最难过的是，其中一条狗狗，我们给它取名叫聪聪，没能挺过来。
Unfortunately, one puppy that we named Cong Cong didn’t make it.
有两只已经完全康复了，一只正在完全康复的路上。我们检查了第五只狗，它看起来健康又快乐。
Two have already made a full recovery, and one is well on her way to a full recovery. We checked in on the fifth dog, who appears to still be healthy and happy.

I can’t sit still, so good luck trying to snap a photo! I still need to get all of my shots, so when those are taken care of I am all yours!

我看起来像一只可爱的毛茸茸的小熊。我有黑色的皮毛，白色的前胸和爪子，喜欢待在自己的舒适区，但如果你对我很温柔的话，我可能会冒险出去一下。我喜欢咬东西，喜欢和其他姐妹打闹。我咬得有点凶，但温和的训练会改正我这种习惯的。
I look like a cute fuzzy little bear. I have dark fur with a white chest and white paws. I like to stay in my comfort zone, but I might venture out if you are gentle with me. I like to bite on things and roughhouse with my other sisters. I bite a little hard, but gentle training can curb this habit.

我是这里面最漂亮的公主，举止优雅而甜美，但有时候我也可能有点小赖皮！我渴望被关注，但不用太多。我不喜欢一个人，总希望和我的姐妹们一起玩耍，打架和睡觉，我还懂得如何在镜头前摆出完美的姿势。
I am the pretty princess of the pack. I act dainty and sweet, but I can be a little rascal too! I crave attention, but not too much. I don’t like to be alone because I enjoy playing, fighting and sleeping with my sisters. I also know how to pose perfectly for the camera.

Meet Niu Niu!
我对人类非常友好，也很有礼貌。我会用鼻子蹭蹭你，抱抱你，让你摸摸肚子！如果你叫我的名字，我就会跑来找你。我有点瘦，但我现在每天都多吃多喝。我还上不了楼梯，但走起路来没什么问题，我得把我的后腿变得更强壮所以我现在每天都要走很长的路来帮助恢复，还有，我还喜欢钻灌木丛咬玩具。
I am extremely friendly to people, and well behaved. I will nuzzle and cuddle you and ask for belly rubs! If you call my name I will come to you. I am a bit skinny, but eating more everyday. I can walk without much of a problem, but I can’t walk upstairs right now. I need my back leg to get stronger. I get taken on long walks everyday to help me recover. I love going into bushes, and biting on my chew toy.
