In the past few months in Pre-Kindergarten 2, we have learned about days of the week, months of the year and a variety of activities. It was extremely fun. This month, we are moving on to colors and shapes.
We have covered the rainbow colors. The students have learned how to recognize the primary colors, and know the names. They can recognize the colors by catching colored fish in the fish bowl, throwing colored bean bags to the bucket, feeding the color monsters with colored balls, making tie dye butterflies and experimenting with colors in a jar. The students did a fantastic job! They have also learned the numbers 1 to 10 by counting the "pepperoni" on the cardboard "pizza" and later on "eating" them. We also learned about classifying shapes by having a shape hunt, being a little shape detective and throwing shoes in the shape.
Throughout the various special activities such as reading stories, singing songs, playing games, exercising, dancing, outdoor activities. Especially self portrait drawing, I can see that their skills have improved. As well as their confidence, communication and independence. The students have been having a lot of fun with our monthly themes. It has been nice to watch them grow and develop themselves.

We have had an amazing time in Pre-Kindergarten 3A after the Chinese New Year. The children came back from Spring Festival happy and ready to learn! We started the new semester by reviewing our class rules and routines. The children have been playing cooperatively with each other and are learning how to solve problems within their group.
This past month, we have learned about ‘Transportation’. We learned a lot of new vocabulary and now the students can describe different modes of air, land and sea transportation. One of our main focuses was to familiarize the students with road safety rules. We pretended to drive cars and dance in our classroom by playing 'red light, yellow light, green light. We had to drive or dance fast when we saw the green light, slow down with the yellow light and stop when we saw the red light. We practiced crossing the road with our dramatic play traffic light prop. Additionally, we learned about emergency services and how they can help us. The children were very excited when we dressed up as firefighters and role played what we would do in that type of emergency. We had our students use and repeat sentences like "oh no, there's a fire", "call for help", "can you help us?". Many of the students knew the emergency response number as well. Very impressive PK 3A! This unit gave us the opportunity for many STEAM challenges and applying our knowledge of what was learned from stories. An example was our building a bridge challenge. After learning that bridges must be stable and go over water, the students worked in small groups to build a bridge together as a team. Learning about ramps, creating and experimenting with them was another fun learning experience.
Students have made huge progress in their early literacy and numeracy skills and they can now identify more and more letters and numbers as a group. When a new letter is introduced, they explore an organized literacy center. Numeracy is also incorporated throughout our centers. This is a great way to help their visual memory and they can also practice their manual skills.
To celebrate 100th day of school, PK3A did a 100-exercise challenge. They exercised and received a sticker for each group of 10 exercises. Additionally, as a grade level, the Pk3’s got together and had an early Valentine’s Day celebration before the holiday. The students spent time with their peers, learned about kindness and made crafts. So much fun is happening in PK3A!

为了庆祝第100天,A班进行了运动100下的挑战。他们进行了锻炼,并每组10次锻炼就获得了一张贴纸。此外,整个幼儿园3岁班年级聚在一起,在假期前举行了情人节的庆祝活动。学生们与自己的同学们一起度过了美好的时光,学会了与人友善相处的重要性,也一起制作了手工艺品。A班真的度过了很多很开心的时间!

Throughout the year, Pre-Kindergarten 3B friends discover and explore different units. Our units of inquiry are based on the interests of the children. Forthe past two months, Pre-Kindergarten 3B friends have beendiscovering Farm Animals. During this unit, wehave discussed a farm’s purpose, that farms arenot just for housing animals, but also producesmany different useful products for people suchas vegetables, fruits, and dairy. We alsoexplored farm animals such as: Sheep, Cows,Horses, Chicken, Ducks, and Pigs. Theseprovocations are discussed during Carpet Timeand then incorporated in our discovery centresduring Exploration Play.
Within this unit Pre-K3B invited our buddiesfrom Grade 3B to create individual farms usingdifferent materials, such as recycled materials,raw materials, paints, etc. We are collaboratingwith Grade 3s, building farms together! Thesefarms will be displayed in our ECE buildingduring the first two weeks of March.

Spring has arrived! New growth is sprouting up, the weather is warming, and insects are busy buzzing, flying, and working. Insects! Bugs are everywhere! Pre-Kindergarten 3C loves to learn about creepy crawlies around us. We learned about different insects, what they look like and how they move.
Discovery centers brought fun learning to our little ones! What kind of kid who doesn’t love an activity where his/her name is the main part of the activity? Caterpillar name activity is one of our favorite writing his/her name within the caterpillar’s body. Caterpillar's pattern is perfect for our numeracy activity, where children able to count, measure, and pattern. 'Bug in a Jar' activity reinforces concepts of number and counting.
Observe and learn! Children had so much fun in exploration and observation. With the help of magnifying glass, children vividly tell all insects they have seen and what it looks like. Children see things they’ve never seen before, like small insects close-up. It opens up a whole new world to them, which they find pretty amazing! The Insect Slimy Sensory Bin was a fun way for us to explore the fascination of slimy creepy crawlers too! Learning about bugs and insects is so much fun for our little ones!
Here at CIS, our young learners learn, play and grow together, and all our children are able to explore his/her senses, and become confident when solving challenges and/or difficulties!
春天到了!万物生长,天气也在变暖,昆虫正忙着嗡嗡作响,飞来飞去忙个不停。昆虫!虫子无处不在!幼儿园3岁C班的孩子非常喜欢学习我们周围的令人奇形怪状的昆虫,而且一起了解了不同的昆虫,以及它们的外观和移动方式。
探索中心为我们的孩子们带来了有趣的学习机会!孩子们怎么可能不喜欢看到自己名字的活动呢!毛毛虫命名游戏,就是在毛毛虫身上写下自己最喜欢的名字。毛毛虫的花纹非常适合用在计算练习上,在上面孩子们可以数数,测量和定型。“罐子里的虫子”的活动加强了孩子们对数字和计数的概念。
观察和学习!孩子们在探索和观察中获得了很多乐趣。在放大镜的帮助下,孩子们可以生动地告诉他们所见过的所有昆虫以及昆虫的外观。孩子们看到了从未见过的事物,例如小昆虫特写。这为他们打开了一个全新的世界,他们发现这真是太神奇了!昆虫粘液感官箱也是同学们探索粘液蠕动爬行者魅力的一种有趣方式!对于孩子们来说,学习虫子和昆虫真是太有趣了!

The end of January kept us very busy in Pre-Kindergarten 4A. Indeed, the transportation unit was a big one as we learned about land, sea, and air transportation. The students were fascinated by the rocket which tied in perfectly with our next unit: space! We learned all about outer space, our universe, the stars and the planets. In Science, we made a volcano, and we made some craters on the surface of our very own moon. We were very interested in the shapes and pictures that we can observe in the night sky. We made our own constellation in class. In Math class, we examined the size of the different planets. The concept of bigger and smaller was very important to us. Finally, we explored Mars and what it is like to live like an astronaut in space through interactive activities. We are very excited to start our new unit on Pets!

Our Pre-Kindergarten 4B students enjoyed our Transportation unit so much that we decided to extend the unit to cover Space Travel and what we can find in space. By singing songs like “Sun, Moon, and Stars”, “Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star” and “Eight Planets” students could get familiar with the vocabulary of the unit. They used foil to make asteroids and threw it at a moon made of shaving foam. This activity imitated the surface of the moon and students could see that the surface of the moon is not smooth, but covered in craters. Students studied a map of the constellations and made their own special constellations by writing their names with white crayons and sticking small star stickers on the cross sections of the letters. They used different pictures of space items to make AB, ABC and AAB patterns. By making patterns, students can make predictions and they start to understand what comes next. Students loved being creative by using a foil ball and different shades of grey paint to decorate their moon. During literacy time, each student had the chance to throw a dice with various planets on. Then, they had to plot their findings on the bar graph. This activity reinforced mathematical concepts like greater than/less than, most and least. It also helped students learn mathematical skills such as sorting, organizing, counting and comparing.

The new lunar year gave Kindergarten A students much occasion to investigate two big ideas related to it: 1) Why and how friends and family celebrate it; and 2) The nature of the moon and its relationship with the earth.
To practice with their reading and writing every day, students received “fortune messages” and were invited to dedicate red envelopes to their friends and families. Students interacted with oranges — how they feel, smell, taste — and learned about the fruit’s connections to good fortune. Students also “set off” their own firecrackers by letting milk, soap, and food ink interact with one another on their experiments table.
Both a special surprise to their loved ones and an opportunity to showcase their culture, students donned their traditional Chinese costumes for a photo shoot. Students’ pictures from this photoshoot were then placed in picture frames, which they decorated using various loose parts and a hot glue gun. To increase students’ abilities to discriminate and sort based on kind, they were presented with four random objects daily and were encouraged to share which object did not belong and why. Then, during their construction time, students had the opportunity to build their own four random objects and say how they were the same and how they were different.
As students were challenged to think about the moon, they learned about its phases and its gravitational effects on the earth. This lunar inquiry segued into students’ current unit on outer space and the origin of the universe. Additionally, students cared for strawberry plants, whose growth they were able to observe and record over time.

Kindergarten B's Race to Space!
Our Inquiry of Focus:
We are flying into one of our most loved units of focus: Outer Space! To open this unit, students began by sharing what they already know about the stars they see in the night sky and the questions they want to explore. These questions were used to guide the direction of our lessons so that students are learning what they are truly interested in knowing! We discovered that stars can be many different sizes and colours. Stars give off both heat and light which can be exemplified by our very own sun! Kindergarten B was very surprised to discover that the sun is a star that we can see during the day!
Our Project for this unit:
To get students excited about outer space, thinking creatively and expressing their ideas, both KB and 1A worked together to build something that can catch a star. Over the last week, we have seen rocket ships, giant trees, and cranes built to be working ‘star catchers’. The imagination of our young ones never fails to amaze me! This week students will finish building their idea, present it to their peers then consider how they could improve what they have made. This collaborative project encourages students to work as a team, express and share their ideas, plan ahead, and learn from their mistakes and successes!
Literacy and Numeracy:
Students continue to learn their lowercase letters and sounds through songs, pictures, and sound hunts. KB students love finding a specific letter sound in the words we have displayed around our classroom and sharing them with their peers. In conjunction with learning letter sounds, we are also learning about sound blending and word families. In addition, everyday students learn a new sight word often relating to our topic of inquiry. For example, we learned the words ‘catch’ and ‘how’ last week because students were learning how to catch a star!
To encourage students to see Math as an exploration of patterns as well as to enhance their 'Math talk', we have been looking at a group of four pictures each week and discussing which of the four items does not belong. This exercise teaches students to look at different features within the four pictures, to identify their similarities and differences and most importantly to explain their reasoning. Usually, these exercises do not have one right answer so it really opens up the door to critical thinking, discussions with one another, and convincing each other of why we think the way we do!
It has been an exciting start to this space unit and we look forward to more hands-on learning experiences such as our upcoming VR space adventure in the IDEA (STEAM) Lab as well as a big number Math challenge using a giant number line!
