If a child is able to solve problems on their own, they will be happier, more confident and more independent; they will not feel frustrated or disheartened in their inefficiency. This is why it is important we begin teaching children problem solving skills from an early age.


At CIS, problem-solving is an essential skill that demands attention from the earliest grades. Students must learn to question and apply their learning outcomes to problem-solving situations in real life on a regular basis.

Grade 1 一年级

English Language Arts

In ELA, students have been working on Descriptive writing. They each created our very own "Easter Peep", gave it a name and took responsibility of taking care of it for a few days. They showed it around our class and even took it to recess and lunch. At the end of the week students did a descriptive writing activity about their "Peep". They described things it likes to do, likes to eat and also described what it looks like.


Math

Students have been working on Mastering Word Problem language in order to solve Word Problems. Students start by reading Word Problems and identifying the words that indicate whether they need to Add or Subtract. Students have to write their own equation for the Word Problem and solve the equation by using different strategies such as drawing pictures, using a number line or finger counting.


Science

The students discussed human preparations for the four Seasons. They played a game dressing paper puppets to different weather conditions. We brainstormed the different activities we can do during different seasons like swimming in Summer, smelling flowers in spring, building a snowman in winter and flying a kite in Autumn. We also discussed the different holidays we find in different seasons and did a sorting activity.


Social Studies 

The students worked on building their very own communities. Students worked in groups planning, creating maps, designing buildings and finally making their communities in the Idea Lab. Students discussed in groups what buildings to add to their community and had to explain why they chose that specific building. Students also named their community and was able to identify what type of community they made.

社会科学

Grade 2 二年级

Grade 2 has been super busy over the last month adding to our literacy toolbox and becoming more independent, worldly learners. They have been super busy testing our growth in our reading and phonics levels and are so impressed with the students’ improvement!


English Language Arts

In English we have been working on a poetry unit where we’re using our knowledge about parts of speech, syllables, rhyming, alliteration, and rhythm. Students each perform one of their poems in front of the class to practice their English speaking. Oral and listening language practice is one of our core curriculum requirements.


Math

In math they have completed addition and subtraction up to 100, and they have gained a strong base in the use of a variety of strategies to add and subtract double digits with place value reordering. They are now learning about measurement using non-standard units to gain experience measuring a variety of things in the real world. 


Science

In science they have been learning and trying real world experimentation using magnets to test the force of magnetism. They learned what materials attract or repel magnets, and what magnets are made from. They are now learning about hot and cold temperatures and how heating and cooling affects materials.


Social Studies

In social studies the students continue to explore Canadian communities. What makes them culturally diverse, and how the landscape affects work, play, goods, services, and tourism.

在数学中,同学们已经完成了多达100的加减运算,并且在使用各种策略进行加和减两位数以及通过对位值进行重新排序方面获得了坚实的基础。现在正在学习使用非标准测量单位进行测量,从而获得在现实世界中测量各种事物的经验。


科学

Grade 3 三年级

English Language Arts

In English Language Arts, students worked on their Big Write, writing about the best part of themselves. We started to learn about poetry and poetic devices; composing examples in the new styles.

 

Math

In Mathematics, students started to participate in measuring time, using referents to measure length and mass. Students examined the concepts of perimeters using standard and non-standard referents and measurements.


Science

In Science, students looked at characteristics of different animal groupings and how to identify and classify examples. We examined different life cycles, learning about the terminology and about the growth that happens in each stage. 


Social Studies

In Social Studies, students continued our Ukraine country study. Students looked at several traditional Ukrainian folktales and practiced re-telling them in their own words. Students had to write a persuasive letter to finish off the unit.

在英语课上,学生努力完成了关于他们最喜欢的身体部位的大写作作业。我们开始学习诗歌和诗歌修辞手法,用新学的知识创作诗歌。

Grade 4 四年级

English Language Arts

Students learned to read to determine the author's purpose. Understanding the author's purpose helps readers better understand the main ideas of the text. They used the acronym "P.I.E." as a pneumonic device to help remember 3 purposes of writing: persuade, inform, or entertain. Students learned about opinion and persuasive writing. They learned how to structure and support their opinions with reasons and examples in order to write for the purpose of persuasion.


Math

Students focused on addition and subtraction of decimals in word problems. They were challenged to draw upon real-world situations in math to display their complete understanding of decimals. Students looked at how area is used as well as calculated. The students estimated areas of different items and used the appropriate units. They learned to find a missing length given the area of a quadrilateral.


Science

Students looked into the waste that humans create, specifically in the form of excessive packaging. The students became more aware of the amount of unneccessary harm simple products do the environment around us. Students created a project to showcase their understanding of waste in our world and excessive packaging using observations made on a field trip.


Social Studies

Students examined the fur trade and its impact on the development of the Metis nation and culture. The students looked at the Francophone influence in Alberta today. They studied the relationship between the European fur traders and the aboriginals and how that helped shape modern Canada.

Grade 5 五年级

In recent Grade 5s' science classes, students got to practice identifying mixtures. Making mixtures occurs every day in the world around us. Solids, liquids, or gases can be combined to make various types of mixtures. The air we breathe is a mixture of various gases. Cooking in the kitchen involves mixing all sorts of ingredients. Even when children play, they could be making mixtures with the materials they use. We may be able to see all the parts in some mixtures, such as when we mix sand with water. Some mixtures may not look like mixtures at all. When we add sugar to tea, the sugar dissolves, and we see only one part of the mixture – the tea. In this lesson students learned to identify mixtures by how they look. The Alberta Program of Studies for Grade 5 Science (POSS) calls on students to achieve the following.


-Describe the properties and interactions of various household liquids and solids and interpret their interactions.

-An experiential homework assignment concluded the activity. It was used as a form of summative assessment in relation to the following specific learning expectation:

Recognise and identify examples of the following kinds of mixtures:

*Two or more solids e.g. sand and sugar

*Solid and a liquid e.g. sugar and water

*Two or more liquids e.g. milk and teaStudents created each kind of mixture above.


At home,  students created each of the above kinds of mixtures, further identifying each as homogenous or heterogenous, as well as listing the substances they used to create each one. Students submitted photos of their mixtures, confirming their understanding of the three different ways mixtures can be created. Great job, everyone!

Grade 6 六年级

English Language Arts

In Language Arts, student's learned to write reflection poems. Reflective poems contain some explicit or implicit generalization about life, by the poet. Simply put, it is a mere reflection of the state of mind of the poet represented in a poetic manner. Reflection involves critical thinking, which is looking deeper into a particular topic.  A reflection poem requires you to think hard about a topic or reading assignment. You need to question your existing knowledge and beliefs. This questioning is called analysis.


Math

In math, the students continued to prepare for their PATs (Provincial Achievement Tests) that they will write in June. With that, they have been using an online program called IXL to help them prepare. It is a program that is outlined strategically to help students practice math content that they will need to know for the PAT. IXL allows the students to work comfortably in their own homes and on a device, while the teacher can closely monitor their progress.


Science

The students in grade 6 have been learning about the exciting unit of sky science. Recently, the students learned about stars and how a group of them form constellations in the night sky when they are connected by imaginary lines. As a culminating activity, the students got to design their own constellations, and just like the real ones, they wrote their own stories to go with it. This activity, really brought out the creativity of the students both in design and story-telling.


Social Studies

In Social Studies, we have been examining historical models of democracy and the political roles played by citizens in the past and today. Student’s are creating a mini-poster on which they will explain, in detail, the role and importance of the 3 Pillars of Athenian Democracy.
