This education stage in the Canadian (Alberta) Curriculum helps students find their passions and abilities, which they can use for future professional development.
Every class and activity held and organised by CIS plays an important role as it creates a strong base for the students’ future career prospects. Choosing the right school and the most rigorous program of study is one of the most relevant things educators talk about when discussing the topic of secondary education.

English Language Arts - Junior High 初中英语语言文学
There are numerous benefits to reading in English. As a result, students continue to, regularly, practice this key skill in our classroom, and in our inviting CIS Learning Commons.
Reading, in English, is an enjoyable way for students to improve, for example, their vocabulary, spelling, grammar, as well as for learning in general. Students, continually, enhance their abilities in English by being exposed to a variety of written work, in order to help them learn to appreciate artistry of texts, which, simultaneously, opens them up to a vast world of knowledge.
Moreover, in their English lessons, students continue to work to enhance their reading comprehension skills. Comprehension is very important, as it helps our learners to improve their English reading skills and to develop their understanding of text. It requires the students to study with care and concentration and to develop effective habits. Comprehension also provides our students with useful practice in writing in English, and thereby develops their writing skills. Comprehension increases not only the enjoyment and effectiveness of reading in English, but is of great assistance academically, professionally, and in their personal life.

Social Studies - Junior High 初中社会科学
Grade 7
Students have been demonstrating an understanding and appreciation of how the political, demographic, economic and social changes that have occurred since Confederation have presented challenges and opportunities for individuals and communities.
We also allow opportunities for students to engage in current affairs, issues and concerns of a local nature, the program of studies provides the flexibility to include these topics within the time allotted for social studies.
Grade 8
Through an examination of Spanish and Aztec societies, students have demonstrated an understanding and appreciation of how intercultural contact affects the worldviews of societies.
Students assessed, critically, how the Aztecs were affected by the Spanish worldview by exploring and reflecting upon the key elements of the worldview of the Aztec civilization prior to contact with the Spanish. How the Aztec civilization’s worldview influence the Aztecs’ choices, decisions and Customs. What were the key elements of Spain’s worldview led to the desire to expand the Spanish empire. The factors such as technology and disease that contributed to the dominance of the Spanish over the Aztec civilization. Lastly to what extent were the divergent worldviews of the Spanish and Aztecs factors in the dominance of one nation over the other?
Grade 9
This past the month the students in grade 9 social studies have gone over economics and consumerism. With economics we have mainly looked at the macro economies of Canada and making comparisons with the US. The students have explored the effects that supply, demand, and price can have and how consumers and producers interact with each other. In the unit on consumerism the students have seen what strategies and tactics producers will use to attract consumers. They have also seen how consumer choice can affect markets around the world. The students finished up their unit by looking closer at businesses and how they operate. Exploring what is needed to attract customers to a product and what will make them buy that product.
七年级

Health - Junior High 初中健康
The students were studying human growth and development for the past month. They looked at how to make proper choices when engaged in difficult situations. They also learned more about relationships and how they can affect someone’s life and what healthy relationships are in roleplays.

Maths - Junior High 初中数学
Grade 7
This month, students have begun our final unit found in the Alberta Program of Studies: Statistics and Probability (Data Analysis). This topic can be found in a broad range of real-life applications, everything ranging from sports, weather reports, blood samples, genetics, insurance, finance, artificial intelligence and game theory. We begin our studies by looking at the basics of measuring central tendency with mean, median and mode. Students are introduced to a largely new vocabulary, such as whether an event is more or less likely ranging from impossible, even chance or certain by understanding the ratio of favorable outcomes to total possible outcomes. Students will conclude their unit by conducing probability experiments that compare the difference between theoretical and experimental probability.
Grade 8
This month, students have begun our final unit found in the Alberta Program of Studies: Statistics and Probability (Data Analysis). This topic can be found in a broad range of real-life applications, everything ranging from sports, weather reports, blood samples, genetics, insurance, finance, artificial intelligence and game theory. This unit builds on the skills developed in the previous year which include measuring central tendency (ex. mean, median and mod). In Math 8, students focus on collecting, displaying and analyzing data as well as solving problems using experimental and theoretical probabilities. This unit will be summarized with a final activity, where students need to collected, display and analyze data from a survey they have created themselves.
Grade 9
This month, students have begun our final unit found in the Alberta Program of Studies: Statistics and Probability (Data Analysis). This topic can be found in a broad range of real-life applications, everything ranging from sports, weather reports, blood samples, genetics, insurance, finance, artificial intelligence and game theory. This unit builds on the skills found in the previous two years, in which students studied central tendency and how to collect, display and analyze data. In Math 9, students are identifying potential problems with survey questions that may be influenced by bias, use of language, cost, timing, cultural sensitivity and ethics. They are also learning to distinguish the advantages and disadvantages of using a census or a population sample.

Science - Junior High 初中科学
Grade 7
Students in Science 7 have been exploring a unit called, “Structures and Forces.” Structures can be both natural and human-constructed environments, serving a variety of purposes and taking a wide range of forms. In learning about structures, students investigate the properties of materials used, and test them under different loads and forces. They examine different ways that structural components are configured, analyze forces involves, and investigate resulting effects on structural strength and stability. As part of their study students also examine construction methods used in the past and the present, and learn how science and technology link together in developing safe and efficient designs that meet human needs.
Students explored the concepts of force and mass and the appropriate corresponding unit for each.
Grade 8
Students in Science 8 have been exploring a unit called, “Mechanical Systems.” Machines are used for many purposes in our daily lives when we need to transfer energy into motion or move materials in a controlled way. In learning about mechanical devices, students investigate how components are linked so that energy is transferred efficiently and desired functions are performed. A comparison of past and present technologies helps student recognize that different approaches have been used over time to meet common needs. Evaluations of efficiency, effectiveness and impacts on daily life, the community and the environment are important considerations in this unit.
Students working on theoretical problems which require the application of Pascal’s Law to hydraulic systems.
Grade 9
Students in Science 9 have been working on a unit called, “Electrical Principles and Technologies.” Electricity provides the means to energize many devices, systems and processes that are part of our technological environment. Electrical devices are used to transfer and transform energy, to provide mechanisms for control and to transmit information in a variety of forms. In this unit, students learn the principles that underlie electrical technologies, by studying the form and function of electrical devices and by investigating ways to transfer, modify, measure, transform and control electrical energy. Students create and modify circuits to meet a variety of needs. Students also develop skills for evaluating technologies, by comparing alternative designs and by considering their efficiency, effectiveness and environmental impact.
Students built and manipulated simple circuits using an online simulation tool. Students measured variables such as voltage, resistance and current. They used this information to compare difference between series and parallel circuits.
七年级

High School 高中学科
Math
Pre-Calculus Mathematics courses emphasize the specialized language of geometry and algebra as the preferred method for learning mathematical concepts and solving problems. In the learning of April, Math 30-1 students finished the concepts of Characteristics of polynomial functions and are now working on Exponential and Logarithmic Functions.
Math 30-2, the senior level of Applied Mathematics which is more designed for real-life Applications. Students learn about mathematical theories, find exact value solutions to equations, and use formal mathematical reasoning and models in problem-solving. Contents covered this month were Probability and Rational Expressions and Equations.
According to the Program of Studies of the Alberta curriculum, Math 31 enables students to use a balance of mental calculations, written calculations, and technology to acquire new knowledge and solve problems so that they may improve the quality of their lives and the lives of others. The majority of content students learned in the past month are applications of derivatives and curve sketching with the first and second derivative tests.
Science
Students in Science 20 (Grade 11) and Science 30 (Grade 12) have continued to explore topics across the discrete sciences. The focus for our Science 30 class has been a major lab report assessment, which emphasized the principles of experimental design and data collection/analysis. The Science 20 class is currently focused on their Physics unit and will be completing an experiment in the coming weeks. In Biology 20 (Grade 11), students have completed a very challenging unit on cellular energy , which included learning about some of the major metabolic pathways in the cell. Our next topic will be “Ecosystems and Population Change,” which will draw on student knowledge from our first two units.
In Science 10 (Grade 10) students have engaged with the discrete sciences through labs, projects, and research essays. Students have learned how to properly perform scientific labs and how to record data properly in lab booklets. The basics of how to write a scientific paper is currently being learned by students as they explore how renewable energy is created through energy conversions. We have just finished our Energy Flow in Technological Systems and will move Forward to Energy Flow in Global Systems.
Social Studies
Students in Social 30 (Grade 12) have learned about ideology and the way it shapes identities and politics. They have learned about the meaning of liberalism in its different forms and studied important liberal thinkers, but have also studied alternatives to liberalism and, in some cases, had the opportunity to interact directly with thinkers from non-liberal ideological traditions. They are currently learning about the role ideology played in the major conflicts between the world powers in the 20th century (World War II and the Cold War). They have been reading key texts in political philosophy, writing essay reactions to them, and also seeking out and analyzing relevant news articles so that they can see the practical application of what they are learning.
Physics
Students in physics 20 (grade 11 physics) have completed the unit on kinematics and explored how to explain motion. Students have completed their first physics lab where they learn the skills to collect data and assess it using the scientific method. Students have completed a dynamics assignment looking at how Forces of friction affect tire design and shape and have moved on to Circular motion and work.
CTS Business Grade 11
ENT 1020- In this module the students learned about how to set up a business. They looked at how to decide on resources for a business as well as what risks come from owning their own, and what they have to do to prevent any possible or foreseeable risks in the future. The module ended with the students creating their own venture plans and presenting them in a method that connected to their next module on digital presentations.
INF 1070- The students are learning different ways to present information in a digital age. They have started first by making PowerPoint videos of their venture plans. Next, they have moved on to making their own commercials, some utilising the use of green screen technology, for most of the students this was done in groups. The students have also presented on different businesses using interactive posters, prezis, and tik tok videos which will carry over into their module on e-commerce. This was a short module and all of the requirements for the course could be grouped into those projects while at the same time the students could learn something new and interesting that they can use in their futures.
Film Studies
Students have been learning the technical vocabulary associated with filmmaking, as well as the storytelling techniques that filmmakers use to create an emotion in their viewers. They have made several different kinds of short films with different groups employing the various strategies they have learned.
English Language Arts
ELA 10-This month students have been introduced to the Film & Media Studies unit, where they were able to analyze a different type of text. Analyzing film and photographs are essential for their learning and they have learned a lot. Students had the opportunity to watch the film Cast Away and then analyze it in further detail through characters, themes, setting, symbols, etc. They have been given a test and a project to end the unit, where they are to get inside the protagonist’s shoes and share what life on a deserted island feels like. Students will move onto a novel study unit next.
ELA 20-Students have been working hard on the Film & Media Studies unit this month. This unit introduced them to new vocabulary, ways in how to analyze a film text, dive deep into questions that can allow students to think critically and analyze a photograph. Students analyzed the film Frankenstein where they learned about Mary Shelley, the gothic horror genre, the enlightenment, characters, themes, symbols and how they all connect with each other. Students were then given a final test and a project to finish the unit.

科学
学习科学20(11年级)和科学30(12年级)的同学们仍然在离散科学的知识海洋中进行探索。科学30主要注重实验报告撰写,期中包含了实验的设计,数据收集/分析等内容。科学20现阶段着重学习物理单元,在接下来的几周内还会完成一个实验。在生物20(11年级)的学习中,同学们已经完成了富有挑战性的细胞能量单元。当中学习了细胞代谢的一些主要途径。下一个主题将会是“生态系统及人口变化“,此单元将会把前两个单元知识进行综合汇总。
在科学10(10年级)学习中,同学们正在通过实验室项目以及研究文章进行对离散科学的学习。同学们学习了科学实验室的正确行为规范,以及如何在实验室台账中记录数据。现阶段我们也正在学习如何撰写科学报告,同时同学们也正在探索如何通过能源转换创造再生能源。我们刚刚结束对技术系统中能量流的学习,并会继续全球系统中能量流的学习。
社会科学
学习社会科学30(12年级)的同学们学习了意识形态,以及其对于身份及政治塑造的方式。他们不仅仅学习了在不同形态中,自由主义的不同含义以及认识了一些重要自由主义思想家, 同时也学习了自由主义的代替形式。在某些场合下,同学们有机会直接与来自非自由主义传统的思想家们进行思想上的交流。现阶段他们正在学习意识形态在20世纪大国冲突之间所扮演的角色(第二次时间大战及冷战)。在学习中,同学们阅读了一些在政治哲学领域的主要文章,并对其进行读后感写作。在写作的同时,同学们也须寻找相关的新闻文章并对其进行分析,以便学生能够了解所学知识的应用。
物理
学习物理20(11年级)的同学们已经完成了运动学单元,并且学会如何解释运动。同时,他们已经完成第一次物理实验,学会收集数据并且用科学方法进行使用及分析。另外,同学们也完成了动力学的学习,研究了摩擦力如何影响轮胎的设计和形状,并且向着“圆周运动与工作”单元进发。
11年级CTS商务
ENT 1020-在这个单元块,学生学习了如何创业。他们学习了如何根据商业上的资源以及自身存在的风险做决定。同时,他们学习了如何规避或者预测未来可能会发生的风险。在单元块结束的时候,同学们要撰写自己的创业计划,并且要用下一个单元块所学习到的方法,以数码的方式向同学们展示。
INF 1070- 在此单元块中,同学们正在学习在数码时代如何用不同的方式传递信息。他们一开始会用PPT录像的方式来展示自己创业计划。接下来,他们会继续为自己的企业创作商业广告。在创作商业广告中,大部分的同学都是以小组的形式进行的,并且他们会接触到绿屏技术。同学们也会用海报,Prezis和抖音等方式来介绍他们的业务。这些活动都将延续到下一个单元块-电子商务的学习中。这是个简短的单元块,所有课程要求都可以在上面提到的项目中得到体现。同时,同学们可以学到有趣的新知识,并在未来加以运用。
电影研究
同学们学习了在电影制作中需要运用到技术词汇,同时,也学习了电影制作人如何用述事技巧让观众对电影情节产生共鸣。他们以小组的形式,运用所学习到的技巧与策略创作不同种类的短篇电影。
英语语言文学
ELA 10-在4月份的学习中,同学们进入了电影与媒体研究单元的学习。在本单元中,他们可以学习分析不同种类的文本。学习分析电影和照片对于同学们来说至关重要,而且通过分析,同学们学到了很多知识。他们有机会观看电影《荒岛余生》并且对电影中的角色,故事主线,场景以及象征意义等元素做进一步的分析。在本单元结束的时候,同学们需要参加一次考试并且需要完成一个项目作业,他们需要想象自己是电影中的主人公,并且描述分享在荒岛上的生活。接下来,同学们会进入到小说单元的学习。
