CIS Classrooms: Finding Enthusiasm In Learning

CISGZ CIS

There is a brilliant child locked inside every student.

One of the most important aspects of becoming a teacher is learning how to motivate students. Students who are not motivated will not retain information, they won't participate and some of them may even become disruptive. As a result, they will not learn effectively.

As the CIS motto goes, success is the ultimate goal that lies in our daily teaching. To achieve that, we motivate the students in various ways to attain their personal goals, to persist and give their best efforts.

Here on the CIS campus, teaching a class full of motivated students is enjoyable for both teachers and students alike. Teachers are working hard to make learning fun and inspire young learners to reach their full potential. Scroll down for a glance at their teaching methods!

Grade 1 一年级

English Language Arts students

In ELA, students have been working on Descriptive writing. They each created their very own "Easter Peep", gave it a name and took the responsibility of taking care of it for a few days. They then showed it around the class and even took it to recess and lunch. At the end of the week, students did a descriptive writing activity about their "Peep". They described things it likes to do, likes to eat and also described what it looks like.

Math

Students have been working on measurement using non-standard units such as cubes or paperclips. They began by the measuring height of different animals using cubes. Then we found different objects around the classroom that we could measure like pencils, books, water bottles and rulers. Students have learned how to measure length as well as height. Students compared the length of different objects and organised them into three different categories: smaller, the same size and larger.

Science

In Science, the students have been learning whether an object is a living or non-living and what makes them a living or non-living object. They discussed different things that a living object might do such as: breathing, moving and growing. They went on a scavenger hunt around school and put objects into the categories of living or non-living. We also looked at different types of plants and how we can identify them.

Social Studies

The past, present and future/old and new are our focus in social studies. We explored communities in Canada in the past and present and then brainstormed about what we thought they would have in the future. The students' ideas included robots, tall buildings and flying cars! Then the students looked at communities in China and how the community around us has changed. We looked at old and new objects eg wagons in the past and how people now use cars as a mode of transport, as well as telephones in the past and mobile phones in the present.

Grade 6 六年级

English Language Arts

In grade 6 Language Arts, students focused on comprehension skills for English language learners to help prepare the grade 6’s for their upcoming PAT. Comprehension strategies are conscious plans — sets of steps that good readers use to make sense of text. Comprehension strategy instruction helps students become purposeful, active readers who are in control of their own reading comprehension. Examples of comprehension skills that can be taught and applied to all reading situations include: Summarizing, Sequencing, Inferencing, Comparing and contrasting, Drawing conclusions, Self-questioning, Problem-solving, Relating background knowledge, Distinguishing between fact and opinion, Finding the main idea, important facts, and supporting details. These skills are particularly important for comprehending what is generally known as information reading or expository reading.

Math

In math, the students have been learning about probability and its two types: theoretical and experimental. They got to understand probability more by doing a number of trials using coins, cards, manipulatives and dice. With that, exercised their understanding by discussing what was supposed to happen before the trial (theoretical probability), and what actually happened after the trial (experimental probability). With these trials, the students firmly understood the main differences between theoretical probability and experimental probability.

Science

In science, the students are learning about evidence and investigation. This past week, the students looked at fingerprints. They learned that everyone has a unique set of fingerprints and that no two individuals have the exact same fingerprints. Therefore, they understood why fingerprints play a vital role when it comes to solving crimes. As a culminating activity, students got to take their own fingerprints and later on, had to match unknown fingerprints with the names of their classmates. They really got into this activity and enjoyed playing the role of detective.

Social Studies

In grade 6. Social Studies, students continued to learn about Greek mythology. Greek mythology reflects past civilizations and provides us with crucial insights into historical events, ancient cultures, relationships, human alliances and much more. Students love reading stories about heroes, battles and action. Having a basic understanding of Greek mythology provides a good foundation because there are so many references to Greek mythology.
