James Matthew Barrie's "PeterPan" is considered one of the greatest fantasy tales ever written. It isthe story of a boy who wouldn't grow up. Follow Peter Pan with Wendy toNeverland and share in their adventures with the lost boys, Tinker Bell and theevil Captain Hook. Originally performed as a play in 1904, "PeterPan" is presented here in the book format that was subsequently writtenand published by Barrie following the success of his play.
"Allchildren, except one, grow up." Thus begins a great classic of children'sliterature that we all remember as magical. What we tend to forget, because thetale of Peter Pan and Neverland has been so relentlessly boiled down, hashedup, and coated in saccharine, is that J.M. Barrie's original version is alsowitty, sophisticated, and delightfully odd. The Darling children, Wendy, John,and Michael, live a very proper middle-class life in Edwardian London, but theyalso happen to have a Newfoundland for a nurse. The text is full of suchthrowaway gems as "Mrs. Darling first heard of Peter Pan when she wastidying up her children's minds," and is peppered with deliberatelyobscure vocabulary including "embonpoint," "quietus," and"pluperfect." Lest we forget, it was written in 1904, a relativelyinnocent age in which a plot about abducted children must have seemed moresafely fanciful. Also, perhaps, it was an age that expected more of itschildren's books, for Peter Pan has a suppleness, lightness, and intelligencethat are "literary" in the best sense. In a typical exchange with thedastardly Captain Hook, Peter Pan describes himself as "youth... joy... alittle bird that has broken out of the egg," and the author interjects:"This, of course, was nonsense; but it was proof to the unhappy Hook thatPeter did not know in the least who or what he was, which is the very pinnacleof good form."
