According to recent media reports, Shaoang Liu and Shaolin Sándor Liu have both successfully obtained Chinese citizenship.
They completed the naturalization process during Christmas last year, which means that they will now be eligible to represent China in the 2026 Winter Olympic Games.
The two are known as Hungary's short-track speed skating heroes following their 5,000m relay victory in 2018—Hungary's first-ever Olympic Winter Games title.
A Hungarian sports official also confirmed in an interview that the brothers had already changed their citizenship from Hungarian to Chinese.
"Shaoang Liu and Shaolin Sándor Liu completed their naturalization through a fast-tracked process. The reason why they were able to obtain Chinese nationality quickly is that they can speak fluent Chinese, which sped up the administrative process."
According to Hungarian media, the fast-tracked process was necessary for the brothers because after changing their nationality, athletes cannot take part in any Olympic Games within three years. Having completed naturalization last year, they could join team China for the Italy Winter Olympics in 2026.
The two will form a mixed relay team with Lin Xiaojun, who won the Winter Olympic short-track speed skating championship for South Korea and obtained Chinese citizenship in 2021.
"We go [to China] every year, so it's not new ground for us," Shaoang told reporters before last year's Beijing Games.
"We love the food, we love the culture, we can speak the language, there's nothing that can surprise us. So we are ready for it.”
