Zheng Linghua, a 24-year-old girl from Hangzhou, once published images of her showing her 84-year-old grandfather her admission letter for a master's degree. In the images, her grandfather could be seen lying on a bed in a hospital.
When she woke up the next day, she found that she has gone viral for all the wrong reasons—the main focus was on her hair and some social media accounts made-up stories about her that were completely out of line.
Born in 1999, she was admitted to East China Normal University to pursue a master's degree in 2022. Excited after receiving the admission notice, she decided to share the news with her grandfather and took photos to share the occasion on social media.
The next day when she woke up, her phone was constantly receiving private message notifications informing her that her photos were picked up by other people and shared extensively all over the internet (on all major social media platforms in China).
▲Someone shared her pictures on social media saying they had received a master's degree admission notice, receiving more than 2.9 million views and more than 11,000 comments.
While some were just harmless, like one social media marketing account that made up a story saying she had successfully upgraded from an advanced diploma to a bachelor's degree, and then in the post, there were course suggestions that users who want to upgrade their degrees can buy.
Well, opportunists!
Or others like the above screenshot who only wanted to brag...
There were some posts that were even more disturbing with captions, stories accompanying the images and comments below the posts unbearable.
For example, some wrote that she was a waitress, a nightclub dancer, and an unscrupulous person suggesting that she had gotten the admission through unorthodox means.
Others were pure insults such as some who called her a pink-haired monster.
But some even went further to insult her grandfather, suggesting that he was her lover.
And all that is because she had dyed her hair pink.
In an interview earlier, Zheng said that the only reason why she dyed her hair pink was that she just wanted to look better when taking her undergraduate graduation photos.
Ever since the bullying began, she said that her life went upside-down and has been collecting evidence hoping that she can get enough proof to sue the bullies.
Alas, on February 19, a netizen who claimed to be Zheng's friend for many years revealed online: "Due to constant pressure from bullies online and on campus, my friend Zheng Linghua's life came to an end on January 23, 2023."
The netizen also revealed that Zheng had been taking antidepressant medication for a long period of time since the bullying began.
Reporters contacted Zheng's schoolmates yesterday and they confirmed that she had taken her life in January.
"If it weren't for the bullying, she would have a very bright future," a former classmate said, adding that Zheng was a positive, optimistic and cheerful girl with above-average academic performance at school (explaining her admission to take master's degree directly after she finished bachelor's degree—she didn't have to take a postgraduate entrance exam).
