A woman in China who has helped more than 1,000 kidney disease sufferers after she had a successful transplant more than a decade ago has inspired neitizens in social media.
Hou Jia from Hunan province in central China supports kidney disease patients. After she survived renal failure in 2012, she was determined to give a hand to other patients with the disease, Shanhai Video reported.
Hou was diagnosed with renal failure during a pregnancy in 2009, leaving her in despair. Luckily, she found hope after she successfully got a kidney transplant in 2012, which left her with strong empathy for other patients and decided to help them whatever she could.

Hou says all her staff and volunteers at her center have or have had kidney disease in the past.
“I have to give back to the community. I want to do something for the patients,” Hou told Shanhai Video.
After contributing as a volunteer for a few years, Hou felt that she wanted to help more people. In 2019, she used her savings totaling 200,000 yuan (US$29,000) to set up a kidney disease care center.
The center has supported over 1,000 patients, including 150 critically ill patients who obtained three million yuan (US$432,000) in financial assistance. Hou said all her staff and volunteers either are or were kidney disease patients.
Aside from helping patients rebuild hope in life, Hou believes she is responsible for raising public awareness about the disease and is convinced that “prevention is better than cure”.
Despite not knowing what impact they would have, Hou has held more than 30 public lectures on the disease.
“I hope every patient I help can see a change in life for the better. And whenever they say ‘thank you’, I feel gratified,” Hou said.
Many people on social media were captivated by the story.
One person praised Hou: “With roses in hand she offers others fragrance.”
Another person commented: “It’s a heartwarming story.”
“She is a great person. She doesn’t want others to suffer the same pain,” a third person added.
