The Sri Lankan government has announced a free visa initiative for citizens from China, India, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, Russia, and Thailand. The policy aims to revive the nation’s tourism industry, a decision announced in the cabinet of ministers’ strategic planning. The visa-free initiative is a pilot program, slated to run until March 31, 2024. It has been executed swiftly, following a detailed analysis of the state of the country’s tourism sector. As part of this initiative, applicants from the countries mentioned above must secure an electronic visa before their arrival in Sri Lanka. Once approved, they are entitled to a 30-day stay, with double entry privileges within those 30 days from their first arrival in the nation. This free visa regime significantly departs from the standard visa requirements, signaling Sri Lanka’s commitment to boosting its tourism industry. However, the government has also clarified that if the 30-day period extends beyond March 31, 2024, the applicant will not be permitted a free visa extension. Many countries have announced visa-free entry for Chinese nationals, the most recent being Malaysia.Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim announced 30-day visa-free entry for Indian and Chinese citizens from December 1. The 30-day visa-free entry is also currently enjoyed by eight ASEAN countries for the purpose of social visits, tourism, and business.Reference: Embassy of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka
