单词回顾 | 他们都是如何用“count”造句的?
在《邀你免费参加“每日一词计划”》一文中我提到要做一个为期一个月的实验,每天精选一个词和两个例句。补充一点,这些词大部分是动词,还有一部分名词,尤其是那些往往被忽略但不应该被忽略的词。
记得美国作家 E.B. White 在《风格的要素》(The Elements of Style)一书中这样写道:
Write with nouns and verbs, not with adjectives and adverbs. The adjective hasn't been built that can pull a weak or inaccurate noun out of a tight place. . . it is nouns and verbs, not their assistants, that give to good writing its toughness and color.
今天挑选了读者用“count”造的10个句子。
一部分读者并没有仔细阅读“count”的这个意思和例句,而是使用“数数”这个意思造的句子,这就违背“每日一词”的初衷了。这种句子我会直接忽略。
下面是值得点评的10个句子:
1. What one did counts more than what one said.
点评:简洁,经典,可以背下。
2. People are busy preparing gifts for their mothers without realizing a simple "I love you" or "thank you" really counts.
点评:周日就是母亲节了,这个句子很应景。
3. What really counts is not the result of one thing, but the process of pursuing that.
点评:这个句子不错,但有点拖沓,试比较:
Process counts more than result.
4. Perseverance is the most important thing that count for learning English.
点评:“count”本身的意思就是“be significant”,所以不需要再用“the most important thing”。试体会简洁的美:
Perseverance counts in learning English.
5. Every bit of effort counts when it comes to learning English, even if it is making a sentence using a word that you may have seen so many times but never thought you could learn it in a more active and effective way.
点评:这个句子我给满分。内容也正是“每日一词”想传递的理念。用词、语法、场景都堪称完美。Kee it up!
6. Trump's revised stance on labeling China as a currency manipulator made it clear that when it comes to diplomacy, pragmatic interests may count more than self-proclaimed principles.
点评:这个句子也是满分,场景具体,用词地道得当。不需要证书,不需要成绩,测试一个人的英文,让他写几句话说几句话就看得出。透过这一个句子作者的知识和英文水平尽显。
7. Looking back at the tragic disaster of Wenchuan earthquake, we are reminded once again that all those which we value, such as money and status, do not count in comparison with fragile and precious life.
点评:昨天是5.12汶川地震九周年,看到这个句子我心里一颤。写完这个句子,作者大概再也不会忘记这个词的用法。
8. In a job, it is not how much money you make that matters, rather it is how much sense of achievement you feel that counts.
点评:这个句子也不错。但我希望我的读者能获得既高薪又高成就感的工作。从统计和经验来看,英文越好,这个目的越容易实现。各位加油💪
9. Only things that you think count count, and nothing counts when you think it doesn't, so what really counts varies.
点评:这个读者很用心,造句很精巧,前面玩了个 wordplay,后面又用到了前面学的“vary”一词,而且所有动词的使用都准确无误。
10. In fact, it is our own thoughts rather than others' opinions when we are in trouble that really counts.
点评:这个句子意识很好,但是写得太乱。写完句子后自己应该检查一遍,虽然不一定能检查出问题。这样改写就清楚多了:
In fact, when we are in trouble it is our own thoughts, rather than others' opinions, that really count.
码了两个小时,希望能让更多人看到。
