Due to the outbreak of the novel coronavirus, many people, who left for the Spring Festival holiday, can't return home as planned.

Some are pet owners who had previously left their pets with water and food for around seven days. These animals are trapped inside their homes and might be in danger of dying from starvation.

In Wuhan, the epicenter of the novel coronavirus outbreak, Wuhan Small Animal Protection Association announced on January 26, saying they could provide aid for pets left alone at home. As of Wednesday, the organization has been contacted by around 5,000 pet owners asking for help.

Apart from helping those who can’t return home on time, Lao Mao, an animal protection volunteer in Wuhan also provides free sitting services for pets of medical staff currently fighting the novel coronavirus.

Net users, animal lovers, and animal protection organizations in other Chinese cities also extended a helping hand to rescue those pets left alone during these tragic times.

Previous rumors said that pets could be infected by the novel coronavirus, so as a result, there were cases of dogs and cats being abandoned in some cities.

World Health Organization said, "there is no evidence that companion animals/pets such as dogs or cats can be infected with the new coronavirus." Jiang Rongmeng, a member of the National Health Commission expert group, also stressed that there was no evidence of the spread of the virus between humans and pets.

Pet dogs and cats are not the only animals in need of help.

Wuhan Zoo on Saturday released a notice on its official Weibo account, saying that aquatic products for animals like pelicans, cranes, and penguins were in severe shortage, because of the traffic and logistic controls in the city.

Only a few hours after it released the notice, the zoo's management hotline received calls from people nationwide willing to help. Local residents sent food to the zoo, while Freshhema, Alibaba-based supermarket, provided the zoo with the products it needed.

A similar case also happened in Nanjing, east China's Jiangsu Province. Nanjing Hongshan Forest Zoo on Tuesday sought help online due to animal food shortage. Its problem was soon solved thanks to joint efforts from solicitous people.
