CGTN CGTN 2020-08-24

Medical professionals at Huoshenshan Hospital in central China's Wuhan have enlisted the help of a sign language expert to communicate with a 75-year-old COVID-19 patient with hearing impairment.

The woman was in serious condition when she was admitted after being diagnosed with the novel coronavirus and medical staff could not properly communicate with her.

They eventually found a sign language teacher online whom they contact via video chat whenever they check in on their patient. The woman has reportedly gotten better after treatment.

In Leshan City of China's Sichuan Province, teachers at Leshan Normal University have created sign language videos to help students with hearing impairments understand the epidemic better.

"Due to the particularity of the deaf's cognition, he or she may not be able to understand exactly the situation. We seek to make videos to explain to children why they can't leave the house, and what kind of things we should pay attention to," said Zhou Lilian, a teacher at the school.

The sign language video also explains ways to wear masks, ways to wash hands, and other protective information.

Moving forward, the university plans to push these videos to the provincial and municipal disabled persons' federations so that more deaf, dumb, and disabled people are able to understand ways to prevent and control the coronavirus.

To help people with hearing impairments get the latest updates of the novel coronavirus, sign language interpreters were offered during the press conference held by the Information Office of Beijing Municipality.

It was noticeable that these interpreters wore special transparent masks during the press conference.

According to the interpreters, wearing transparent masks allows people with hearing impairments read interpreters' lips or see facial expressions, thus helping them to understand the sign language more accurately.
