9月4日，《华盛顿邮报》（The Washington Post）报道称，美国华盛顿大学卫生统计评估研究所（IHME）最新发布的新冠疫情模型预测结果显示，到2021年1月1日，全球死亡人数可能增加三倍，造成190万人死亡，而美国累计新冠死亡病例可能达到41万例。

IHME还预测，如果美国政府现在采取预防措施，就可以避免更多人死亡，如严格执行“口罩令”，到年底累计死亡病例数可能约为28.8万例。而如果政府不采取任何干预和防护措施，届时情况可能更糟糕，死亡病例数将有可能增至62万例。
The IHME forecast also stated that if the U.S. government takes preventive measures now, more deaths can be avoided. For example, if the "mask order" is strictly enforced, the cumulative number of deaths by the end of the year may be approximately 288,000. However, if the government does not take any intervention and protection measures, the situation may be worse by then, and the number of deaths may increase to 620,000.
