Man Refuses 100k Reward After Saving 4 People in Phuket

Haofeng Zhang is a survivor from the recent Phuket accident, in which 47 people lost their lives. He saved four people in total, including his girlfriend in total. After his return, his company rewarded him for 100,000 CNY, but he refused. He is a safety supervisor at a mine, responsible for safety management and inspection. Because of his work, Zhang was well trained on safety issues.

Originally, Zhang and his girlfriend Meng went on their pre-marriage trip to Phuket. They both were on the boat that sunk. People say that Zhang first sent Meng to the lifeboat, then he gave up his surfboard to an old couple. He pushed them to the lifeboat and didn’t get on himself because it was full by the time. Zhang didn’t think what he did was as great as people praised him for. “Under the circumstances, I have done what I am capable of doing”, he said, “I saved them because I can”. Besides, Haofeng doesn’t want any other interviewers coming to him. All he wants is to get his peaceful life back on track.

As his girlfriend Meng and other family member claims, they were not surprised that Zhang chose to save other people with deisregard to his own chances of living. “He has always been a nice person.”Meng says, “This is typical him. He is the kind of person who feels bad for homeless people all the time.”

His best friend Zou says that Zhang doesn’t speak up very often in life, but whenever people need him, he is there. He is always the first offering help to poor people.

Zhang’s family friend Hu says, “We’ve known each other for more than 10 years. He is a decent person who is nice to everyone in his life, even strangers.” A few years ago, Zhang had a studio near a primary school. He would always go and help those kids to cross the road. So Hu wasn’t surprised on hearing Zhang's selfess act.

Netizens feel that he should take the 100,000 RMB reward because he is worth it. An internet user said that "Zhang's a very humble man. He doesn't brag about his heroic deeds, but this is exactly why many people are moved by his story. He is a hero."
