Douyin is #1 on the Chinese App Store, But What Is It?

2018-03-15 Jenny Ren ShanghaiWOWeng

If you had to guess which app was number one on the Chinese app store, you might be inclined to name either WeChat, QQ, eleme or maybe Taobao, but surprisingly it’s none of those. Since March 13th, the top spot has been claimed by an app called Douyin. So what the heck is that?

Douyin is a ‘short video social app’ that allows users to create and share short clips that can be heavily edited with filters, music, AR and many other fun effects.

The app was launched in September of 2016 under the name ‘Tik Tok’ and was largely seen as a Chinese rip-off of Musical.ly at the time. But the copycat criticisms have largely faded since Douyin’s parent company (Toutiao) purchased Musical.ly this past November for approximately 1 billion dollars. With over 61 million daily active users, big brands have begun investing heavily into Douyin marketing campaigns and PR blitzes.

Unfortunately, the app isn't available on the American version of the app store, which means you'll have to create an account on the Chinese app store if you don't already have one.

Once you have it though, using the app is easy. To create a video, all you need to do is choose a theme song and then start filming. The editing function might take you a while to figure out since it has so many special effects to choose from.

Match your video with the beat of the music, and maybe add some storylines or humor to your performance to make it funny and viola, that’s basically how you make a Douyin video. There are actually quite a few westerners on Douyin who are very popular so if you happen to be a foreigner looking for internet fame in China, Douyin is the perfect place to get started!

But if you are just there to watch, here are some accounts worth following.
