This summer, the temperature in Shanghai has exceeded 40℃ (104℉) for three days.

Yesterday morning, several places in Shanghai were listed in the top 10 of the temperature ranking charts of national weather stations, including Xujiahui, Pudong and Nanhui.

The temperature at the Xujiahui Weather Station was the highest of all, making Shanghai the hottest city in the country.

Since temperature records began, there have been 16 days in Shanghai reaching 40℃ or higher, 3 of which occurring this year.

On July 13, the highest temperature in Shanghai matched Shanghai’s highest temperature in history - 40.9℃, previously recorded on July 21, 2017.

Reasons of the Extreme Heat

Secondly, the ongoing La Niña provides climatic conditions for the occurrence of high temperatures in the south since June. According to statistical analysis, in the summer following most La Niña events, the west Pacific subtropical high tends to move northward.

Since late June this year, the subtropical high has moved northward. Together with the influence of typhoon "Chaba", a stable warm high was formed over China, creating a swath of high temperature weather areas.
