Mulled wine is an elixir with a long history. The ancient Romans enjoyed this hot wine during the winter cold, and spread the recipes in Europe, to lands they conquered.
Those recipes sound simple, with just a trio of ingredients, namely, wine, sugar and spices. (And sometimes a boost from booze such as rum or brandy.)
But the combinations of ingredients, and thus aromas and flavors, are innumerable, especially as such a wide array of spices can be used, from cinnamon and star anise to cloves and cardamom. It adds some spice to winter life.
And in the case of CHEERS, mulled wine has a few twists.
"We have made gluehwein for our stores and special events for nearly a decade, since the very start," says CEO Claudia Masueger. "It's exciting to see that as our team gets more experience with this drink each winter, they like putting their own touches on the recipe!"
Mulled wine will be available on weekends in several CHEERS stores, check to see if your local has it! And you can also grab a bottled version -- Rapunzle Gluewein Red -- to enjoy a hot treat later.
Or just join the CHEERS mulled wine tour, which includes 'feuerzangenbowle.' That's a long word that refers to lighting rum-soaked sweet bread on fire so that it drips into and sweetens the wine. It will be quite a spectacle.
We will "get lit" with that sugar loaf at the first stop, near Chaoyang Park. Then start our walk toward the Workers Stadium area, making three stops to play games and -- at each venue -- enjoy a piping hot cup of mulled wine.
The tour fee is RMB 88 per person, which includes the wine and any prizes you might win. One hundred per cent of that fee goes to Maovember and its partner The Library Project, which uses the money to set up reading rooms in rural China.

Q&A
What's Maovember?
Maovember is a month-long campaign that teams restaurants, bars, suppliers and customers for good causes. The event is a spin on ‘mao’, a coin worth one-tenth of a yuan or 1.5 cents, and Movember, a global health mission where men grow mustaches. The idea is small donations can yield big results. So, if you want to be a "walk star" and join this year's CHEERS mulled wine tour, we will kick off at 2 PM on Sunday, November 15, near Chaoyang Park. Dress warmly -- and prepare to say that way thanks to delicious mulled wine.
